Helping your child to read.

Comprehension
Making sense of text is the sole purpose of
reading. Talking to your child about the
storyline and the characters is just as important
as decoding the text. The first books sent home
will be picture books and will introduce the main
characters from our reading scheme. Please
encourage your child to read the book from the
pictures and predict what they think will happen
next. Your reading bookmark will give you
examples of good questions to ask and discussions
to have with your child when reading any book.

Reading at school

• Your child will read individually at least
• once per week with a member of staff and
• the school day presents many opportunities to
• develop reading skills.
• shared reading
• guided reading
• flashcards
• exposure to print in the environment.

Helping your childs reading at home.

• It will greatly benefit your child if you find 5
  or 10 minutes each day to do the following
• Share your childs reading book with them. Talk
  about the events in the story, the characters,
  the illustrations etc and ask questions to
  confirm their understanding.
• Practise any High Frequency Words your child may
  have in their word tub and help them to make
  sentences with them.
• Practise recognition of the phonemes in the sound
  book. Change the order in which you practise them
  to avoid your child memorising them from the
  order in which they appear in the book.

Phonics

• Children receive 10/15 minutes designated
• Phonics teaching per day.
• Enjoyable session with a great emphasis on games
  and participation from the children.
• Phonemes (letters) are introduced in quick
  succession (around 4 per week) and subsequently
  revised and reinforced.
• As new phonemes are learned, children are
  encouraged to include them in their blending and
  segmenting activities. e.g. sat, at
• Large emphasis placed on correct letter
  formation.
• Being able to rhyme is an important skill in
  early reading, we play lots of rhyming games and
  include lots of rhyming stories and songs in our
  Literacy work and throughout the school day.

Developing your childs independence

• Encourage them to dress/feed
• themselves at home
• Label every item of their school
• belongings with their name.
• Say goodbye outside on the yard
• in the morning. (lining up)
