first stared. Some people think that the Celts
who were living in Britain before the Romans
arrived had their own kind of football.

As football became more and more popular many
clubs were faced with the fact that some of their
players were losing time at work and therefore
paid wages for playing football.

Many countries played a kind of football. Italy
was one of the first to make rules. Each Italian
team had 26 players. This is different today. Now
teams have 11or15 players. These new rules were
made in England.
