Some Leadership Theory Controversial Issues
ATHENS UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
BUSINESS DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCE
TECHNOLOGY
  • Not defining leadership seems to be an accepted
practice among scholars who discuss leadership
    (Barker, 1997 Rost, 1991)
  • If we know all too much about our leaders, we
know far too little about leadership (Burns,
    1978)
  • Most authors are unaware of their reliance upon a
very old paradigm of leadership that is beginning
to conflict with the realities of the modern
    world (Barker, 1997)

3
An Overview of Leadership Theory

  • Leadership as an ABILITY
  • Initially, leadership was explained by the
internal qualities with which a person is born,
    e.g. personality, physical and mental
    characteristics.
  • A second major thrust looked at leader behaviors,
in an attempt to determine what successful
    leaders do.
  • A third approach dealt with the interaction
between the leaders traits, the leaders
behaviors, and the situation in which the leader
    exists.

An Overview of Leadership Theory (continued)

  • Leadership as a RELATIONSHIP
  • Later on, another approach deals with an analysis
of the people who are led by leaders. The
importance of the followers in leadership is
emerging (House and Mitchell, 1974), and
leadership is seen as an interaction between the
goals of the followers and the leader
  • The broad and varied body of work on leadership
suggests that there are many appropriate ways to
lead. For optimal success, both the leaders
style and situation can be evaluated, along with
characteristics of the followers (Horner, 1997)

An Overview of Leadership Theory (continued)

TECHNOLOGY
  • Leadership as a PROCESS
  • The most current theory on leadership looks at
leadership as a social process that happens with
group of people who are engaged in an activity
    together (Drath and Palus, 1994)
  • Everyone involved in the activity is assumed to
play an active role in leadership (Horner, 1997).
  • Since every employee must be motivated and
committed to reaching organizational goals, not
just leaders, leadership takes on a different
    role.

Some Current Consideration Issues

  • The entire workforce, from front-line employees
to CEO, is being called upon more and more to
provide ideas, make decisions and respond to
changes. These changes require an equally drastic
change in how the leadership of organizations is
    assessed, conducted and learned.
  • The companies that win will be those that build
or maintain a steady focus on developing leaders
at all levels of the company (Tichy, 1997)
  • Instead of focusing leadership development almost
exclusively on training individuals to be
leaders, leaders may learn to develop leadership
by improving everyones ability to participate in
the process of leadership. This would require
research to help us understand what roles,
behaviors, and capabilities are involved in
leadership as a social process (Barker, 1997)
