  • The Kentucky Bluegrass Award is an annual award
for the best books as chosen by the students of
    Kentucky.
  • GOAL To encourage the students of Kentucky K
through 12 to read quality childrens literature.

4
  • The key element is that it is a childrens choice
award. Approximately 45 states in the US now
have such an award for childrens literature.

5
Who may participate?
  • All Kentucky public and private schools as well
as public libraries are welcome to participate in
    the program.

6
  • Author Alan Schroeder, winner of the KBA in 1998
stated that an author always likes to receive an
award, but it is especially significant when it
    comes from the children themselves.

7
History of the KBA
  • KBA began with a 2,000.00 grant from the Ashland
    Oil Company.
  • The first winner (1983) was Jumanji by Chris Van
    Allsburg.
  • In 1989 two divisions, K-3 and 4-8 were created.

8
  • Prior to their release of the 2000-2001 Master
Lists, the KBA committee agreed to create four
    divisions--K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.
  • In April 2001, the first winners of each of
    these divisions were announced.

9
Recent winners
  • 2006
  • K-2 Knuffle Bunny A Cautionary Tale (Hyperion)
    by Mo Willems
  • 3-5 The Report Card (Simon Schuster) by Andrew
    Clements
  • 6-8 So B. It (HarperCollins) by Sarah Weeks
  • 9-12 Looking for Alaska (Penguin) by John Green

10
Implementing the KBA Program
  • Program can be easily implemented.
  • No participation fee.
  • Materials made available on line in late April,
    e.g.
  • Master lists
  • Tally Sheets

11
Voting
  • Aid the KBA voting process at your school or
library by using the ballot and tally sheet links
provided. At the end of the KBA year, count the
ballots and submit the results using the tally
    sheet.
  • Teachers, Librarians, and any interested adults
are encouraged to nominate books for each year's
KBA Master Lists. Please use the link provided to
nominate as many books as you like.

12
Ballots
  • All participating students must read at least two
books from the current Kentucky Bluegrass Award
Master Lists before they are eligible to cast a
vote for their favorite book. Using the ballots
provided, students should specify which books
they have read from the Master Lists, then select
