Mission Architecture
  • There are lots of houses and buildings in Palo
Alto that look like the Missions. Mission
    features are things like
  • Roof tiles and roof tops
  • Arcades and corridors
  • Arched windows and doors
  • Doors that are very large and heavy, and made of
    wood
  • Façades

3
Roof Tiles and Roof Tops
  • Roofs are made of clay tiles shaped over logs,
not the workers legs as the legend says
  • The tiles are fireproof and waterproof
  • They last many decades
  • They wont catch on fire when hit with a fire
    arrows
  • These red roof tiles are common at Stanford
    University.

Arcades and Corridors
  • They are pretty and can have plants
  • You can stay out of the rain and the sun
  • The pillars were made of baked bricks
  • The overhang kept the adobe brick from
    disintegrating in the rain

6
Arched Doors and Windows
  • Some windows had a tight oiled skin stretched
    across the opening.
  • Windows were high to protect against Indian
    attacks.
  • Some of the windows instead of oil skins they
    would have imported glass.
  • The doorway was arched but the doors themselves
    were big, heavy, and rectangular.
