ADR and SIMMOD
  • ADR became a SIMMOD user Why?
  • To analyse the operational impact of current
works in progress and many future construction
works to be done at the airport during next five
    years
  • To accomplish infrastructure development as in
FCO and CIA Master Plan (future runway capacity
improvement, interaction between FCO and CIA
    airports, future traffic increase, environmental
    impact)
  • To work together with the Italian ATC Provider
(ENAV) testing new solutions for the management
of the whole air and ground airport system

3
ADR and SIMMOD
  • ADR became a SIMMOD user Why?
  • There are several works in progress and many
construction works to be done at the airport
    during next five years
  • New gates construction
  • Runway re-surfacing
  • Taxiways renewal
  • New aircraft stands and taxiway system
  • New runway rapid exits
  • Structural and operational renewal of all
    runways

Current facilities renewal as well as new
airside/landside infrastructures

ADR and SIMMOD
  • ADR became a SIMMOD user Objectives
  • We want to analyse with SIMMOD the impact of each
work on the airport throughput and on the airport
ground movements (delays, travel time, etc.)
  • We want to analyse all possible alternative
solutions when part of the airport facilities
will be closed due to renewal or construction
    works
  • Alternative taxi paths to be covered when part of
the existing taxiway system will be closed for
    construction works
  • New gate assignment when some gates will be
closed or unavailable as a consequence of
    construction works
  • New runway use when runway threshold will be
    displaced for construction works
  • Etc.

6
ADR and SIMMOD
  • ADR became a SIMMOD user Methodology
  • In order to study the impact of each construction
work on the airport, we started building FCO
    Model
  • We started with the Baseline Scenario which has
    been calibrated on real data
  • We collected data to be used in SIMMOD like,
traffic sample, timetable, runway use, 2004
    traffic distribution, etc.
  • We will keep FCO Model as Baseline Scenario for
future studies to be performed as comparison
    against Baseline

7
ADR and SIMMOD
  • ADR became a SIMMOD user Methodology
  • We decided to divide each work in different
    phases
  • For example, double taxiway Bravo is divided into
    9 phases
  • Each phase is analysed as a single SIMMOD
    scenario
  • Results such as runway throughput, ground delays,
ground movements, are recorded for each phase
  • Different solutions are taken into account, and
the best are used during critical periods due to
    construction works

8
ADR and SIMMOD
  • Fast-Time simulation scenarios
  • Double Bravo first phases
  • Double Bravo and New Pier C working phases
    (overlap)
  • FCO Master Plan
  • Example of Fast-time simulation results
  • Following there is an example of the type of
    results we are looking at

FCO Master Plan is under approval

  • ENAV, the Italian service provider, has designed
and validated with SIMMOD new runway use in order
    to increase airspace capacity
  • We have introduced these new procedures in the
FCO Master Plan fast-time simulations since,
together with the new FCO terminal assignment
strategy, which is Multi Alliance Hub oriented,
    represent future airport scenarios
  • New departure and approach procedures have been
designed to manage departure peaks along the day
as well as to use parallel runways as independent
    and increase capacity
  • ENAV airspace strategy couples with ADR ground
strategy which aims at an airport division
through the new Multi Alliance terminal
    assignment
  • FCO will have like two separate airports
