1
FIRE SAFETY 101!
  • The basics of fire safety

2
What is fire?
  • Fire is an equal balance between fuel, heat, and
    oxygen.
  • If you remove or add to much of the three main
needs of a fire, it will go out.

3
How hot is fire?
  • Paper- around 450 deg.
  • Log- around 1,800 deg.
  • Blow torch- around 2,400 deg.
  • Candle- around 2,600 deg.
  • Bunsen burner- around 2,400 to 3,000 deg.
  • Gas- 5,500 deg. plus

4
What puts out a fire?
  • Not all fires go out when you spray water on it.
In fact, some fires get hotter and spread if you
    put water on them.
  • The four main ways to put out a fire are water,
smother, foam, or a burn out.

5
What puts out a fire?
  • If you put water on a oil, grease, or car fire it
wont help. It makes it worse.
  • To put out the fires above you would use foam.
Its not just soap foam its a special substance
    made just for fires.
  • All other fires get water unless large wild fires
you would just build a perimeter to stop the
flames and let it burn until the fire has no more
    fuel left to burn.

6
Different types of fires
  • A few of the types of fires are structural, car,
    brush, and wildfire.

7
Burn laws of Indiana!
  • It is illegal to a have a burn of any kind other
    than a cooking fire.
  • Burning brush, trash, or anything is illegal even
if you are next to it with a house and a fire
    extinguisher.
  • You can be fined up to 500 per emergency vehicle
on scene. That includes POV, fire trucks,
    ambulances, and police cars.
  • To have a legal controlled burn you must first
get the okay from Harrison County Dispatch. You
must call them and they will notify the fire
department that you have the okay to burn or not.
  • To burn a structure you must remove the shingles
and vinyl siding and then a officer will come out
and okay to burn or tell you other wise.
