Guerilla War
  • -(Dont Copy) Guerrilla tactics are based on
    intelligence, ambush, deception, sabotage, and
    espionage, and their ultimate objective is
    usually to destabilize an authority through long,
    low-intensity confrontation. It can be quite
    successful against an unpopular foreign regime a
    guerrilla army may increase the cost of
    maintaining an occupation or a colonial presence
    above what the foreign power may wish to bear
  • Guerilla tactics used by Viet Cong or
    Vietnamese communists in South Vietnam.
  • Vietcong supplied by NVA (North Vietnamese Army),
    and communist sympathizers in South

U.S. Involvement before 1965
  • North wanted to unify the country into one
    communist state
  • South refused to hold unification elections, so
    North attacked
  • U.S. sent in military advisors to teach South
    Vietnamese to fight, and defend
    their government

Growing Involvement
  • U.S. considered fight between North and South as
    part of the Cold War (fight against Communism)
  • The North considers it their Civil War, and
    wants to reunite their country divided by the
    west.
  • Diem (Leader of South) is considered a dictator
    and puppet of the U.S.
  • Communists create National Liberation Front (NLF)
    to liberate Vietnam from Diem

Tonkin Gulf Resolution
  • (1964) Two destroyers off coast of North Vietnam
    are attacked
  • In reality, no one was injured, and a bad
    lighning storm led to misjudgment
  • Destroyers were protecting South Vietnamese
    gunboats making raids on North
  • President Johnson asks congress for authority to
    send large military force to repel agression
    and liberate Vietnam
