2
What is an Ice Storm?
  • An ice storm is a type of winter storm
characterized by freezing rain- cold ground,
conditions can become dangerous. Cold rain
freezes as it touches the ground and other
    surfaces

3
How are Ice Storms Produced?
  • Ice storms typically begin with snow and strong
easterly winds conditions well ahead of an
approaching warm front. The snow, however,
changes briefly to sleet and then to rain that
freezes on impact, coating all exposed surfaces
with a growing layer of ice.

4
Why are Ice Storms classified as severe Weather?
  • Driving becomes extremely hazardous causing
devastating car crashes and pile ups.
  • pedestrians are severely affected sidewalks and
    stairs become slippery,
  • Power lines and trees fall due to ice/ lose of
    power

5
Where/when do ice storms occur?
  • The North American Ice Storm of 1998 was a
massive Ice Storm that struck a relatively narrow
swath of land from Eastern Ontario to southern
Quebec to Nova Scotia in Canada, and bordering
areas from Northern New York in January 1998. It
caused massive damage to trees and electrical
infrastructure all over the area, leading to
widespread long term power outages. Millions were
left in the dark for periods varying from days to
weeks, leading to more than 30 fatalities, a shut
down of activities in large cities like Montreal
and Ottawa and an unprecedented reconstruction
    effort of the power grid.
  • Ice Storms usually happen in the north and could
    strike in a snow storm.
