Visible Light Spectrum
3
Opaque Objects
  • Light arriving at an opaque surface is either
    absorbed or reflected.
  • Only the wavelengths that are reflected produce
    the color that we see.
  • Every other wavelength in the visible light
    spectrum is absorbed.
  • Objects that reflect all wavelengths appear
    white.
  • Objects that absorb all wavelengths appear black.

4
Transmitting Light
  • Objects that transmit light are either
  • Translucent scatter the transmitted light
  • Transparent do not scatter the transmitted light

5
Primary Additive Colors
  • Light sources add wavelengths to make a color
  • Primary colors of light are red, green, blue
  • When these three are combined they add to produce
    white light.
  • Other combinations and intensities combine to
produce every other color we see.
  • Additive color is a result of the way our eyes
    detect color.

Primary Additive Colors
7
Complimentary Colors
  • Red Green
  • Yellow
  • Green Blue
  • Cyan
  • Blue Red
  • Magenta
  • Red-Cyan
  • Green-Magenta
  • Blue-Yellow

8
Primary Subtractive Colors
  • Colored inks or paints subtract wavelengths from
the white light and make a color.
  • Primary colors of pigments are cyan, yellow and
    magenta
  • The pigment determines which light will be
    reflected from an object.
  • When these three are combined they produce black.
