1
Depression Management Workshop Wednesday 23rd
November 2005
2
Introduction
  • We are not convinced that we should run a group
specifically for depression and would like to
    share our experiences with you

3
Hazeldene Day Therapy
  • We are a unit that treats people over 65 years
with anxiety and depression related problems.
  • We do not currently offer a Depression Management
    Group.

4
Why we should run a Depression Management Group
  • The N.I.C.E states that CBT and other
    psychotherapies are an evidenced-based, effective
    way of treating depression.
  • CBT has been found equally effective when
provided on an individual and group basis.
  • I am not the only one

5
Potential difficulties with running Depression
Management Group
  • Patients have difficulty in applying CBT
    principles.
  • Reluctance to complete homework tasks.
  • May need to be complimented with individual work.
  • Difficult to treat the individual within a group
    setting.
  • Not person-centred?
  • Does having depression in the title put people
    off?

6
Proposed Depression Management Group
  • Based on a CBT model.
  • Designed to treat people with mild to moderate
    depression.
  • Closed group held over 15 weeks.
  • Jointly run by mental health nurse and
    occupational therapist.

7
Aims and Objectives
  • Increase understanding of depression.
  • Facilitate patients understanding of their
    personal symptoms.
  • Teaches the control of negative automatic
    thoughts.
  • Changing behaviour overcoming inactivity.

8
What the group will include
  • Activity scheduling.
  • Thought records.
  • Behavioural experiments.
  • Formation of relapse plans.

9
How we treat depression currently
  • Occupational Therapists use meaningful and
purposeful activity as a way of enhancing mood,
    maximising function, and challenging the
    inactivity that depression causes.

10
Groups treating depression symptoms
  • Support Group/Locality Groups.
  • Creative Therapy Group.
  • Loss Group.
  • Womens Group.

11
Discussion Points
  • Should we run a Depression Management Group?
  • What is happening in other areas?
  • What should we call the group?
  • Should there be different groups for acute Vs
    chronic depression?
  • Why are some areas not offering a depression
management group are we avoiding it?
