What is Autism?

• Autism is a complex developmental disability that
  typically appears during the first three years of
  life. The result of a neurological disorder that
  affects the functioning of the brain, autism and
  its associated behaviors have been estimated to
  occur in 2 to 6 per 1,000 births. Autism is four
  times more prevalent in boys than girls and knows
  no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries. Family
  income, lifestyle, and educational levels do not
  affect the chance of autism's occurrence.

Warning Signs

• impaired use of nonverbal behaviors in
  socialization   (eye contact, facial
  expressions, body postures, gestures) failure
  to develop peer relationships appropriate to 
  development level lack of seeking to share
  enjoyment, interests, or   achievements
  spontaneously with others lack of social or
  emotional expression/ reciprocity

• delay or total lack of verbal language
  development  without attempts to compensate
  impairment in ability to initiate or sustain a
  conversation  with others (in children who have
  adequate speech) lack of various, spontaneous
  make-believe play or social imitative play
  appropriate for age/level

• significant preoccupation with one or more
  stereotyped and  restricted patterns of interest
  that is abnormal by  intensity or focus.
  stereotyped and repetitive motor mannerisms  
  (hand or finger flapping or twisting, complex
  whole  body movements) persistent

Wrap Around

• As a professional in this field I specialize in
  wrap around services with children with autism.
  I been working with children with autism for 2
  years and have been around a special need child
  for 11(my brother who is bipolar). Wrap Around
  is a home based service for families to work on
  individual goals of the child to meet the
  families needs. The goals are in the areas of
  family, pee/social, and recreational to mention a
  few. A company will who offers wrap around
  service will send a therapist who has gone
  through extensive training to the house to work
  on these behavioral management tasks. This is
  what I do. I go into the houses of clients and
  work on tasks to improve the behaviors of the
  child to the familys needs.
