3
Introduction
  • The purpose of this study is to formulate a
roadmap for system and process issues of
packaging from today to 2010. More specifically,
    this study covers two areas
  • Sustainable development
  • Packaging logistics
  • A separate study covers a third area
  • Intelligent packaging

4
Defintions
Sustainable development
  • A development that meets the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs.
    (Brundtland commission)
  • The concept of sustainable development is based
on a need for economic growth in society and a
demand that this take place in an environmentally
    and socially sustainable way.

Packaging Logistics definition
  • An approach with the purpose of developing
packaging and packaging systems that support the
logistics process and meet the customer/user
    demands. (Packforsk, 2000)
  • The Packaging Logistics approach includes the
whole supply chain, from raw material producer to
    end-user and reverse logistics.

5
Background trends
General trends in a global perspective
Consumer trends and drivers in developed countries
  • Globalization
  • Urbanization
  • Regionalization
  • Economic growth
  • Technology development
  • Population dynamics
  • Knowledgeable society
  • Climate change and other environmental issues
  • Issues of security

6
The trends and drivers impact on the packaging
area (3-5 year perspective)
Sustainable development
  • Environmental aspects
  • Environmental concerns will maintain a high level
of importance in the packaging industry.
Sustainable development as a concept and related
terms like recyclable, reusable and resource
    saving packaging, renewable and biodegradable
    material will continue to expand.
  • There is a need for development of new recycling
techniques, for example as regards separation
into different material groups. More knowledge is
needed about how, for example, printed
electronics, sensors and RFID tags affect waste
    management .

7
The trends and drivers impact on the packaging
area (3-5 year perspective)
Sustainable development
  • Economic and social aspects
  • The packages ability to sell the product will be
even more important than it is today.
  • Attractive design - shapes and nice colors
  • Added value - functional and user friendly
  • Society faces challenges regarding socially
sustainable growth, e.g. to meet the needs of an
older population. Home care with user-friendly
packaging systems could be a possible way to meet
    the future demands resource-wise.

8
The trends and drivers impact on the packaging
area (3-5 year perspective)
Packaging logistics
  • New networks and increased supply demand chain
    interaction
  • System view of the packaging
  • Increased collaboration between supply chain
    actors
  • New business models
  • Packaging Integrator
  • Logistics efficiency and flexibility
  • Traceability

9
Packaging beyond 2010
  • New roles for the packaging
  • suppliers
  • The packaging supplier will play
  • an integrated role with the
  • supply/demand chain offering
  • full packaging related services.

10
Packaging beyond 2010 (cont.)
  • Emotionally intelligent packaging will be seen in
    the market.
  • The differentiating packaging concepts are
strongly predicted to be seen in the market
    place.
  • The know-how in packaging logistics also in the
global arena is predicted to be high.
  • Packaging integrators agility in the
    supply/demand chain, taking more packaging
related responsibility is to be seen.
  • Shorter and intense supply/demand chain
    relationships' leading to rapid packaging
    concepts.

11
Packaging beyond 2010 (cont.)
  • New networks and increased supply demand chain
    interaction
  • System view of the packaging
  • Increased collaboration between supply chain
    actors
  • New business models
  • Packaging integrator
  • Logistics efficiency and flexibility
  • Traceability

12
Competitive advantages of the Swedish industry
Sustainable development
  • In relation to the goals set up in the European
sustainable growth strategy, Sweden often holds a
    good position.
  • Swedish packaging industry and packaging
knowledge has a very advanced position in Europe
and to a significant degree also in the rest of
the world. The sustainable growth in the Swedish
    packaging industry are very good.
  • Swedish packaging industry of today works in
    close cooperation with Swedish research
institutes and this contributes to the positive
    development on the sustainability area.
  • Swedish companies also work actively together
    with trade organizations and authorities.

13
Competitive advantages of the Swedish industry
Sustainable development
  • Companies regard sustainable growth as an
    opportunity, where short-term profitability is
    combined with long-term benefits.
  • The packages ability to sell the product will be
even more important than it is today
  • Attractive design - shapes and nice colors
  • Added value - functional and user friendly
  • Society faces challenges regarding socially
sustainable growth, e.g. to meet the needs of an
older population. Home care with user-friendly
packaging systems could be a possible way to meet
    the future demands resource-wise.

14
Competitive advantages of the Swedish industry
(cont.)
An example of the broad Swedish research and
development within sustainability areas connected
to the packaging industry .
15
Competitive advantages of the Swedish industry
(cont.)
  • Benchmarked contributor of Packaging logistics
    know-how.
  • Ongoing research work to integrate packaging
system, product and supply demand chain to a
    whole.
  • Increased knowledge in supply/demand chain,
    differentiated end-user requirements leading to
    emotionally intelligent packaging.

16
Conclusions
  • Development demanded by
  • Increased amount of packaging due to sustained
global economy, population growth in the middle
    class sector, and smaller households.
  • Consumers, agile supply chains, added emotional
    values.
  • Sustainable businesses, products and consumption
is a long-term prerequisite for all branches.
  • Market and legislations on sustainability will be
an increasing factor in the near future.
  • New networks, created by universities, research
    institutes, consumer organizations and packaging
industry will be clearer, will be strong drivers.
