Status of Auxiliarys Chart Updating Web Site
(CUWEB)
  • The development of the NOAA Chart Updating
Website is on hold due to limited Auxiliary
    participation in chart updating activities.
  • Only 96 members in Auxiliary participate.
  • Only 34 members of D7 participate
  • The Marine Chart Division will undertake a cost
benefit analysis to see if further development is
    warranted.
  • Auxiliary will continue to use NOAA 77-5 Form.

10
What is Adopt A Chart?
  • An Adjunct of the NOS/USCG Auxiliary chart
    updating program. In this program
  • A Flotilla adopts a chart or chart section.
  • The Flotilla continually and completely covers
that chart area, and submits reports on that
    chart.
  • When a significant number of reports has been
received by NOS, a note is added to the chart
acknowledging the participation of that Flotilla.

11
Status of National Adopt-A-Chart Program
  • 34 Flotillas have adopted 45 of NOAAs 1020
    nautical charts.
  • 4 Flotillas in D7 have adopted all or parts of 8
    charts.
  • Only 13 of these flotillas have submitted reports
    within the last two years.
  • 3 Flotillas in D7 have submitted reports within
    the last two years.

12
Congratulations To Flotilla 46!!!
  • Flotilla 46 partially adopted chart 11485 in
October 2003. They have already earned enough
credits to have the acknowledgment note put on
    the chart!

13
ATON Forms Manuals
  • Continue to use the old version of the CG-5474 to
    report all ATON/PATON Verifications and
    Discrepancies
  • According to the National Division Chief, the new
ATON form should be up by the first of the
    year.
  • ATON/CU Study Guide (1995) is still the approved
version. A DRAFT copy(2003) can be found on the
    D7 website.
  • The earliest the new Guide could be ready is
    early Spring of 2005.

14
Routing of Forms
  • Routing remains unchanged for 2004.
  • CG 5474
  • Copy 1 to ANT or Bridge Section
  • Copy 2 and 3 to DSO-AN

Common Problems in Completion of ATON
ReportsForm CG-5474
  • LLNR not present or incorrect
  • Aid is named improperly
  • Out-of-date Light List used-therefore wrong LLP
    reported
  • No Latitude/Longitude reported
  • Latitude/Longitude not reported in D.M.S.
  • Division and Flotilla not recorded on 5474
  • Most of these problems can be remedied by proper
use of the current Light List.

20
Using the Light List.A Quick Lesson
  • There are Eight(8) column headings on each page
in the Light List. These are
  • NO.
  • Name and Location
  • Position
  • Characteristic
  • Height
  • Range
  • Structure
  • Remarks

21
Column Designations
Column (1) No. (LLNR)
LLNRs are assigned to all aids.

Aids are numbered by fives by order of
appearance in LL.

Other numbers and decimal fractions are used for
newly established aids.

Aids are renumbered periodically to assign whole
numbers to all.

Aids are assigned two numbers when they appear
in several sections of the LL.

22
Column (2) Name and Location.
  • A dash (-) is used to indicate the bold heading
is part of the name of the aid to navigation.

  • When reporting defects or making reference to
such aids to navigation in correspondence, the
full name of the aid, including the geographic
    heading, should be given.

No. Name and Location
Charleston
Harbor 2370 Charleston Entrance 200 Lighted
Whistle Buoy C 2370.1 -Channel Lighted
Buoy 1
  • Use the first two columns of a light list page
shown above to answer the following questions.
  • What is the name of the ATON with LLNR 2370?
  • Charleston Entrance Lighted Whistle Buoy C
  • 2. What is the name of ATON with LLNR 2370.1?
  • Charleston Harbor Channel Lighted Buoy 1
  • Hint Dont forget the meaning of the Dash!

25
Column (3) Position
  • Geographic position of the aid to navigation is
given as latitude and longitude to the nearest
    second.
  • Position is approximate and is intended only to
facilitate locating the aid on the chart.
  • Many GPS units are set to give position in
degrees and decimal minutes. Convert decimal
minutes to seconds before entering Lat/Lon on the
    CG 5474(AUX) form.
  • You can avoid the math by presetting your GPS to
    give readings in DMS.

EXAMPLE Convert 2530.567 to DMS
Multiply the decimal fraction by 60
.567 X 60 34.02, therefore
2530.567 is equivalent to 253034
26
Column (4) Characteristic
  • Light Characteristic (timing sequence) for a
    lighted aid to navigation.
  • Morse code characteristic for a radiobeacon.
  • When checking the timing on lights, remember
there is a 6 allowable variation.

27
Column (5) Height
Height above the water from the focal plane of
the fixed Light to mean high water listed in
feet.
Column (6) Range
Nominal Range of lighted aids to navigation, in
nautical miles, listed by color for alternating
sector and passing lights. Not listed for ranges,
directional lights, or private aids to navigation.
28
Column (7) Structure
Structural characteristics of the aid to
navigation to include
  • Dayboard,( if any) i.e., see Nav Aid Reference
    2004
  • 1st letter S,T, J, M,C, K,N
  • 2nd letter (color) G,B,Y,R,W
  • 3rd letter (range center stripe color)
  • intracoastal information follows dash(-) -I,
    -SY, -TY
  • Description of fixed structure
  • see Nav Aid Reference 2004
  • Color and type of buoy
  • Height of structure above ground

29
Column (8) Remarks
General remarks, including
  • Fog signal characteristic
  • RACON characteristic
  • Light sectors arc of visibility
  • Radar reflector if installed on fixed structure
  • Emergency lights
  • Seasonal remarks
  • Private aid identification
