The Beginning

• Lived in the cramped ghetto of Frankfurt, Germany
  on Judengrasse
• After death of parents took an apprenticeship in
  the Jewish banking house of Oppenheimer at
  Hannover

Getting Started

• Mayer moved back to Frankfurt and took over his
  fathers business in 1750.
• During this time and into the 1760s Mayer began
  to lay down the foundation of his vast fortune
• Used selling rare coins as a means to not make
  money but establish contacts with persons of
  wealth, power, and influence.
• In addition Mayer wrote a letter to one
  particular man of power Prince William of Hanau
• On September 21, 1769 his worked paid off when
  the Prince allowed Mayer to bear the arms of the
  prince in front of his shop.

• The next year Mayer married Gutele Schnaper.
• Together they had a large family consisting of
  five successful sons and daughters that would
  later carry on the up and coming dynasty.

The Business

• Mayer became a agent for William and helped him
  with his human cattle business
• He then gained trust with the Prince through his
  diligence in his position of responsibility, thus
  causing the Prince to entrust him with 3,000,000
  when he was forced to flee to Denmark.
• Rothschild then embezzled the money that was
  originally embezzled by the William from the
  troops who were originally entitled to it. With
  this twice embezzled money, Mayer established
  himself as the first international banker.
