The doctrine concerning Mary is an evolving one
  • In 600 AD. Prayers directed to Mary, dead
    saints, and angels.
  • In 1854 AD Immaculate Conception of Mary,
    proclaimed by Pope Pius IX.
  • In 1922 AD Virgin Mary proclaimed co-redeemer
with Jesus by Pope Benedict XV.
  • 1950 AD Assumption of Virgin Mary into heaven,
    proclaimed by Pope Pius XII.

Apparitions of Mary
  • Our Blessed Lady spoke over people swearing, not
keeping the Sunday as a day of rest and
    disobeying Gods laws.
  • Her words were very important and impressive If
My people do not obey God, I shall be forced to
let go of My Sons Hand.
  • This statement points to the last days of the
world. Our Blessed Lady's sad expression, her
tears and words show us Her very real care for
and sympathy with all people. . youll never
be able to repay Me for what I have done for you.

Apparitions of Mary
  • The lady signaled, with her finger that
    Bernadette should come nearer.
  • Bernadette was almost frozen to the ground. She
spontaneously grabs her rosary, kneels down, and
tries to make the sign of the cross.
  • But she cannot do this until The Lady who is
carrying a Rosary with a large shining Crucifix
has made the sign of the cross.
  • While Bernadet is praying the rosary she sees
that The Lady is also letting her beads slide
through her fingers, but without moving her lips.
  • This vision lasts for about 15 minutes. The
other girls saw nothing of this vision but
Bernadette told them about it and thus the news
    is told to mother Soubirous.

Apparitions of Mary
  • Two or three hundred people have come together at
    the grotto.
  • They see the face of Bernadette Soubirous looking
    very sad.
  • She crawls on her knees over the ground stopping
several times to mutter penance. penance..
penance. She said that The Lady had asked her to
do this as penance for the sinners.
  • Hail Marypray for us sinners

Our Lady of Lourdes 1858 Bernadette Soubirous

Apparitions of Mary
  • Once again the grotto is full of people.
  • The outward apparition of Bernadette Soubirous
during this apparition is strange, due to what
    Mary is saying to her.
  • " My daughter, I want to tell you, just for you
and about you one last secret, which you must
    never tell anyone else.
  • Now go and drink and wash at the spring and eat
    of the grass growing nearby.
  • Mary points with Her finger to the grotto.
  • Then Bernadet sees dirty muddy water, she cannot
drink it. She tries three times to dig deeper and
    deeper.

Our Lady of Lourdes 1858 Bernadette Soubirous

Apparitions of Mary
  • On the fourth occasion she can drink it and
    washes herself with it.
  • Then she eats the grass.
  • Some of the people present say "she is mad".
  • But after Bernadet dug in it the spring became
enormous. It was to become a spring of 100,000
    litres a day.
  • Many people call it the miraculous water.
  • The tenth apparition took place in the presents
    of 800 people.

Our Lady of Lourdes 1858 Bernadette Soubirous
11
Apparitions of Mary
  • She asks The Lady, her name, repeating the
question three times. The Lady smiles at her and
then Bernadette gets the courage to ask The Lady
her name for a fourth time! Now she is given THE
    ANSWER.
  • I am the Immaculate Conception
  • This statement from the Lady confirms the
    doctrine of Pope Pius 1X.
  • She is "The Lady Clothed with the sun", The
    completely pure one.
  • Our Lady announced Her Immaculate Conception to
Sister Catharina Labouré during the apparitions
at the Rue du Bac in 1830.
  • .

Our Lady of Lourdes 1858 Bernadette Soubirous

Apparitions of Mary
  • She also taught Sister Catharina Labouré the
    following prayer.
  • O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who
    have recourse to Thee
  • The miraculous medal was at first called "the
medal of Mary of The Immaculate Conception".
  • Bernadette Soubirous did not understand it, not
even following her visit to the Parish Priest She
started to understand it in the afternoon
following her talk with Mr. Estrade, a learned
man, that The Lady was The Virgin Mother.

Apparitions of Mary
  • The Lady of Lourdes had identified herself by
referring to the Catholic dogma that had been
defined by the church only four years before. On
December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX declared the
Immaculate Conception to be an official dogma of
    the church.
  • From his bull we read "We declare, pronounce
and define that the most blessed Virgin Mary, at
the first instant of her conception was preserved
immaculate from all stain of original sin...."
Obviously, by giving such a response the Lady of
Lourdes was claiming to be the Blessed Virgin
Mary -- the mother of Jesus Christ.

Arm, if we listen to and obey Her Messages.

Apparitions of Mary
  • See the graces which I shall
  • pour out over all who wear it
  • in trust of me and whilst
  • spreading this devotion.
  • Whilst so saying, She spread
  • Her hands and rain fell very generously, within
each drop clearly written was a grace health,
trust, respect, love, holiness, all the graces
which one could ever things of in greater or
lesser amount. To this She added these graces
are from My Son I take them out of His Heart. He
    can refuse me nothing

Scapulars
  • The oldest and best known of the Marian scapulars
is the brown scapular dedicated to Our Lady of
Mount Carmel. Its origin is allegedly connected
    to a Marian apparition.
  • The New Catholic Encyclopedia explains
"According to Carmelite legend, Our Lady appeared
to St. Simon Stock in Cambridge in 1251 and,
showing him a brown scapular, declared that
whoever wore it until death would be preserved
from hell and on the first Saturday after his
death would be taken by her to heaven."

Apparitions of Mary
  • Flying around the altar were several angels. The
women called several other people to the church.
    They too saw the apparition.
  • What they and thirteen others saw in the
still-bright day was a beautiful woman, clothed
in white garments, wearing a large brilliant
crown. Her hands were raised as if in prayer.
  • This woman was understood by all who saw her to
be the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus
and the Queen of the Angels.
  • Our Lady of Comfort, the Blessed Virgin, our
    Blessed Mother.

Apparitions of Mary
  • In his third and final apparition to the children
in autumn 1916 in Fatima, the Angel gave them
Holy Communion, and demonstrated the proper way
to receive Our Lord in the Eucharist
  • all three children knelt to receive Communion
and Lucy was given the Sacred Host on the tongue
and the Angel shared the Blood of the Chalice
    between Francisco and Jacinta.

Apparitions of Mary
  • The second encounter took place on the Feast of
St. Anthony of Padua. Our Lady asked the children
to pray the Rosary daily. She promised to take
Jacinta and Francesco to heaven soon.
  • To Lucia, She gave the mission of remaining in
the world to establish devotion to Her Immaculate
Heart. She promised Lucia "My Immaculate Heart
will be your refuge and the way that will lead
you to God." On that occasion Our Lady gave the
children another vision of God and revealed to
the Her Immaculate Heart, surrounded by thorns,
outraged by the sins of humanity, and seeking
    reparation for them.

Apparitions of Mary
  • Lucia later revealed that as she spoke these
words, Lady Mary opened her hands and rays of
light from them seemed to penetrate the earth so
that they saw a terrifying vision of hell, full
of demons and lost souls amidst indescribable
    horrors.
  • This vision of hell was the first part of the
"secret" of Fatima, and was not revealed until
    much later.
  • The children looked up to the sad face of the
Blessed Virgin, who spoke to them kindly "You
have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners
go. To save them, God wants the devotion of My
Immaculate Heart to be spread over the world and
    to increase.

Apparitions of Mary
  • August 13th 1917 the children were in prison in
Ourem, a few kilometres from Fatima. Jacinta, in
tears offered everything for the conversion of
    sinners.
  • The time that Our Blessed Lady would appear came
    and went.
  • The twenty thousand people in Fatima saw and hear
the rumble of thunder and a vividly brilliant
flash of lightening in the clear blue sky.
  • The sun grew pale and the whole atmosphere
changed to a dull, sickly sort of yellow, while a
light cloud, of beautiful shape, appeared and
hovered a while over the oak tree and the place
    of the apparitions.

Apparitions of Mary
  • On the 19th of August Lady Mary appeared in
Fatima to the children in the area which is
called Valinos, I want you to come to Cova da
Iria on the thirteenth and continue to pray the
rosary, at the last apparition, I shall do a
miracle, so that all people may believe.
  • When Lucie asked Our Lady to heal some sick
people. Our Lady answered, During the next year
    I shall heal some.
  • Pray! Pray! A lot and bring offers for the
sinners, as a lot of souls go to hell because
nobody offers themselves for these souls or prays
    for them.

Apparitions of Mary
  • On a rainy day at October 13th of 1917 in Fatima
the mystic Lady appeared for the sixth and last
    time to the children.
  • More than 70.000 people in Fatima were present
    that evening.
  • The children were still the only one who can seen
her and she declared that she was the Holy Maria.
  • She declared the children her three secrets and
appeared then. Suddenly, the rain stops and the
clouds drove away to reveal the sun. The sun
began to turn around and seems to fall down !
    witnesses declared later.

Apparitions of Mary
  • The people thought that the world ended but the
sun resumed its normal position back to the sky.
  • By tradition it is told that this phenomenon
    happened twice.

25
Apparitions of Mary
  • The sun miracle which all these people had
witnessed can best be described in the following
    words.
  • After the long extensive rains, the sky became
blue, people could easily look into the sun,
which started to spin round like a wheel of fire
which radiated wonderful shafts of light in all
    sorts of colours.
  • The people, the hills, the trees and everything
in Fatima seemed to radiate these marvellous
    colours.
  • Then the sun stood still for a moment then the
wonderful thing that had happened reoccurred. It
was repeated for a third time.

Our Lady of Fatima 1917 Francisco Marto, Jacinta

26
Apparitions of Mary
  • But now the sun broke loose from the heavens and
came down to earth with a zigzagging movement.
  • It became bigger and bigger and looked as though
it would fall on the people and flatten them.
  • All were frightened and fell to the ground while
they prayed for mercy and forgiveness.
  • The people prayed

Apparitions of Mary
  • Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which
seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this
fire were demons and souls in human form, like
transparent burning embers, all blackened or
burnished bronze, floating about in the
conflagration, now raised into the air by the
flames that issued from within themselves
together with great clouds of smoke, now falling
back on every side like sparks in a huge fire,
without weight or equilibrium, and amid shrieks
and groans of pain and despair, which horrified
us and made us tremble with fear. fear and terror.

FATIMA First Secret is the vision of Hell
27
28
Apparitions of Mary
  • The demons could be distinguished by their
terrifying and repulsive likeness to frightful
and unknown animals, all black and transparent.
This vision lasted but an instant.
  • How can we ever be grateful enough to our kind
heavenly Mother, who had already prepared us by
promising, in the first Apparition, to take us to
heaven. Otherwise, I think we would have died of
    fear and terror.

Our Lady of Fatima 1917 Francisco Marto, Jacinta

29
Apparitions of Mary
  • We then looked up at Our Lady, who said to us so
kindly and so sadly You have seen hell where
the souls of poor sinners go.
  • To save them, God wishes to establish in the
world devotion to my Immaculate Heart.
  • If what I say to you is done, many souls will be
saved and there will be peace.
  • The war is going to end but if people do not
cease offending God, a worse one will break out
during the Pontificate of Pius XI.

Apparitions of Mary
  • Jacinta died soon afterwards 20th of February
    1920.
  • Francesco had died the previous year on the 4th
    of April 1919.
  • Eight years after the Fatima events, when Sister
Lucy was living in a convent in Pontevedra,
Spain, she experienced another apparition of Our
    Lady.
  • On the 10th of December 1925 Our Blessed Lady
appeared to her in Pontevedra, with Her Child in
    a cloud of light.

Apparitions of Mary
  • The Child said "have mercy on the heart of your
Blessed Mother, it is surrounded with thorns with
which the ungrateful people still continue to
    pierce it.
  • Continually piercing Her heart with nobody
removing the thorns by acts of restitution".
  • Then Our Blessed Lady said "My daughter, see My
heart surrounded by thorns with which the
ungrateful people pierce it with their
    blasphemous language and ungratefulness.

Apparitions of Mary
  • You try to comfort me and to make it known, that
all who have attended Mass on the first Saturday
for five consecutive months, been to confession
and received Holy Communion, prayed the rosary
and kept Me company for fifteen minutes while
meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the
Rosary, with the intention of making reparation
to My Immaculate Heart. and do this has
restitution. I shall grant them the mercy which
they will need in their hour of death".

Apparitions of Mary
  • The Blessed Virgin appeared in Beauraing more
    than 30 times.
  • "I shall convert the Sinners
  • "I am the Queen of Heaven and the Mother of God
    pray always
  • "Do you love My Son? Do you love Me? Then offer
    yourself up for Me!!
  • "THE QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
  • The apparition identified herself as "the
Immaculate Virgin," "the Mother of God," and "the
    Queen of Heaven."
  • The apparitions were given the rare "positive
affirmation" of the church. This is the fourth
    category

Apparitions of Mary
  • "I opened my eyes and stared at the image of the
Madonna above the bedhead. To my great amazement
I saw that the effigy was weeping. I called my
sister-in-law Grazie and my aunt, Antonina
Sgarlata, who came to my side, showing them the
tears. At first they thought it was a
hallucination due to my illness, but when I
insisted, they went close up to the plaque and
could well see that tears were really falling
from the eyes of the Madonna, and that some tears
ran down her cheeks onto the bedhead. Taken by
fright they took it out the front door, calling
the neighbors, and they too confirmed the
    phenomenon"

Apparitions of Mary
  • Several cases of weeping Rosa Mystica statues
mentioned by Mehring S. Francisco Solano,
Argentina, tears of blood since 1988. Many of
these statues weep, sometimes even tears of
    blood.
  • Our Lady requested that the desired devotion be
realized, and said I have placed myself as the
mediatrix between my Divine son and mankind,
especially for the soul consecrated to God.

The doctrine concerning Mary is an evolving one
  • Pope Benedict XV (1914-1922) wrote of Marys
unique role in the redemption of mankind when he
offered She renounced her mothers rights for
the salvation of mankind and, as far as it
depended on her, offered her Son to placate
divine justice so we may say that with Christ
    she redeemed mankind.

36
37
The doctrine concerning Mary is an evolving one
  • Pope John Paul II in his General audience of
Wednesday, December 18, 1996 said Beginning
with Simeons prophesy, Mary intensely and
mysteriously unites her life with Christs
sorrowful mission  she was to become her Sons
faithful co-worker for the salvation of the human
race. What Pope Benedict XV, Pope John Paul II
and other theologians are saying is the Virgin
Mary cooperated in our redemption under and
subordinate to Christ and that God freely willed
to associate the Blessed Mother in an intimate
and direct way with her Son in the redemption of
    mankind.

37
38
The doctrine concerning Mary is an evolving one
  • Other quotations of Pope John Paul II expressing
    Marys role as co-redemptrix
  • March 31, 1985 May Mary our Protectress, the
Co-Redemptrix, to whom we offer our prayer with
great outpouring, make our desire generously
correspond to the desire of the Redeemer.

38
39
The doctrine concerning Mary is an evolving one
  • October 6, 1991 Birgitta looked to Mary as her
model and support in the various moments of her
life, She spoke energetically about the divine
privilege of Marys Immaculate Conception.  She
contemplated her astonishing mission as Mother of
the Savior. She invoked her as the Immaculate
Conception, Our Lady of Sorrows, and
Co-Redemptrix, exalting Marys singular role in
the history of salvation and the life of
Christian people. (after Mass to honor the
    canonization of St. Birgitta).
  • November 4, 1984 To Our Lady- the Co-Redemptrix-
Charles (St. Charles Borromeo) turned with
    singularly revealing accents.

39
40
The doctrine concerning Mary is an evolving one
  • Mary as co-redemptrix
  • Five cardinals have sent a letter inviting
prelates worldwide to join them in petitioning
Benedict XVI to declare a fifth Marian dogma they
said would proclaim the full Christian truth
    about Mary.
  • Over 500 Bishops Have Sent Their Request for
    This Solemn Definition
  • The text includes the petition that asks the Pope
to proclaim Mary as the Spiritual Mother of All
Humanity, the co-redemptrix with Jesus the
redeemer, mediatrix of all graces with Jesus the
one mediator, and advocate with Jesus Christ on
    behalf of the human race.

Is Worship of Mary Biblical?
  • Facts about Mary in the Bible
  • Not one prayer to Mary in the Bible
  • Not one instance of her miraculously helping
    anyone
  • Not one suggestion that she could or would help
    anyone miraculously or otherwise
  • From Genesis thru Revelation it is established
  • God not Mary is our refuge
  • God not Mary is our help in times of trouble
  • God not Mary is our salvation

42
Is Worship of Mary Biblical?
  • Facts about Mary in the Bible
  • The Magi worshipped Jesus NOT Mary
  • NIV Mat 22 and asked, "Where is the one who has
been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in
the east and have come to worship him."
  • NIV Mat 211 On coming to the house, they saw the
child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down
and worshiped him. Then they opened their
treasures and presented him with gifts of gold
and of incense and of myrrh.

43
Warnings from the Bible
  • NIV 1Jo 41
  • Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but
test the spirits to see whether they are from
God, because many false prophets have gone out
    into the world.

44
Warnings from the Bible
  • NIV Gal 18-9
  • But even if we or an angel from heaven should
preach a gospel other than the one we preached to
you, let him be eternally condemned!
  • As we have already said, so now I say again If
anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than
what you accepted, let him be eternally
    condemned!

45
Warnings from the Bible
  • No where in Scripture are we told to put our eyes
upon anyone other than the Lord himself. We are
told to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and
    finisher of our faith.
  • NIV Heb 122 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the
author and perfecter of our faith, who for the
joy set before him endured the cross, scorning
its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the
    throne of God.

46
Warnings from the Bible
Though she was greatly blessed, and undoubtedly a
godly woman, she still needed a savior. Mary
said, "And my spirit has rejoiced in God my
Savior," (Luke 147). A sinless person does not
need a savior.
47
Warnings from the Bible
Jesus said, "...You shall worship the Lord your
God, and serve Him only" (Matt. 410). The
incredible danger of Mary worship is warned about
in Exodus 204-5, "You shall not make for
yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in
heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the
water under the earth. You shall not worship them
or serve them for I, the Lord your God, am a
jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers
on the children, on the third and the fourth
generations of those who hate Me."
48
Warnings from the Bible
Where does it say that Mary was exalted above
angels and men second only to her son? This
would mean that Mary is just under Jesus, the
creator of the universe, in position. Vatican
II's comments are not biblical.
49
Warnings from the Bible
Mother of God is a misleading term. Mary is
not the Mother of God in the sense that God, the
creator of the universe, had a mom. Rather,
Mary is the mother of the human nature of Jesus,
not the mother of the divine nature.

perfectly sinless life. ("Catechism" 411, 493)
  • Romans 323 says "For all have sinned, and come
short of the glory of God".

from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had
bidden him, and took unto him his wife And knew
her not till she had brought forth her firstborn
son and he called his name JESUS." "Till"
(until) means that after that point, Joseph did
"know" (have sexual relations with) Mary.

  • ASSUMPTION - At the end of her life, Mary was
taken up ("assumed") body and soul into Heaven.
    ("Catechism" 966, 974)
  • If Mary had been supernaturally assumed into
Heaven, wouldn't John (the disciple that Mary
    lived with) have mentioned it?
  • When Enoch and Elijah were taken up to Heaven,
the Bible recorded it. With Elijah it was
recorded in some detail. (See Genesis 624 and 2
    Kings 21 18.)

  • Can make Jesus do things. A full page newspaper
ad showing Mary and Jesus says, "He hasn't denied
her anything in 2,000 years. What would you have
her ask Him?" This is not official Catholic
doctrine but it is a widespread attitude which is
    encouraged by pious literature.
  • Points people to Jesus.
  • Mary said, "Whatsoever he saith unto you, do
    it."  (John 25)

Catholicism v.s. Christianity
  • CATHOLIC MARY
  • BIBLICAL MARY

  • Apparitions of "Mary" have promised that if
people wear certain objects (such as a Scapular
or Miraculous Medal) or say certain prayers then
they are guaranteed to go to Heaven. The Catholic
Church has not officially approved of these
practices, but it has also not discouraged them.
  • Knew that she needed a savior. (Luke 147)

DEVOTION TO MARY
When Pope John Paul II was shot, while the
ambulance was rushing him to the hospital, the
Pope was not praying to God or calling on the
name of Jesus. He kept saying, over and over,
"Mary, my mother!" When the Pope recovered, he
gave Mary all the glory for saving his life, and
he made a pilgrimage to Fatima to publicly thank
her. (Note 4)
63
DEVOTION TO MARY
Jesus said, Where your treasure is, there will
your heart be also." (Luke 1234) Some statues
of Mary have real crowns made of gold. The
crowns on the original statues at Fatima and
Lourdes are real crowns made of real gold.
64
DEVOTION TO MARY
Vast sums of money are spent on some special
statues of Mary. For example, the statue of Our
Lady of the Pillar in Saragossa, Spain has a
crown made of 25 pounds of gold and diamonds,
with so many diamonds that you can hardly see the
gold.

Apparitions of Mary
  • Pope John Paul II and the Roman Catholic Church
have acknowledged that this has become the
greatest religious event of our time.
  • Mary offered a unique contribution to the Gospel
of suffering, by embodying in anticipation, the
expression of St. Paul she truly has a special
title to be able to claim that she completes in
her flesh what was lacking in the suffering of
    Christ

The Marion faction
  • The Marion faction throughout the Roman Catholic
Church has repeatedly petitioned the Pope to
confirm the traditions of Mediatrix and
Coredemptrix and Advocate as Christian dogma.
  • Note this could be the reason he chose the name
    Pope Benedict XVI

Apparitions of Mary
  • Starting in 1968, and continuing over a 2-3 year
period, an apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared
over the Coptic Church of Saint Mary in Zeitoun,
    Egypt.
  • It was witnessed by millions of people of
different religious beliefs, it was photographed
and videotaped. Miraculous cures were also
experienced. Investigations into the matter found
no natural explanation. Time to start moving the
    goal posts?

The Common Link
  • Apparitions of Mary are the common link that
connects Islam and Hinduism to Roman
    Christianity.
  • For the secret power of lawlessness is already at
work but the one who now holds it back will
continue to do so till he is taken out of the
way. And then the lawless one will be revealed,
whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the
breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor
of his coming. The coming of the lawless one
will be in accordance with the work of Satan
displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles,
signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that
deceives those who are perishing. They perish
because they refused to love the truth and so be
saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful
delusion so that they will believe the lie and
so that all will be condemned who have not
believed the truth but have delighted in
    wickedness. 2 Th. 27-12
