What is a Unified Digital Parking System?
  • Its Unified!
  • All systems work together seamlessly, regardless
of vendor or where the data is stored.
  • Its a Parking!
  • Still doing the things that make parking fun.
  • Its Digital!
  • Elimination of the analog stuff information is
    recorded and shared electronically.
  • Mostly getting rid of the paper.

3
The most frustrating thing about managing parking
technology is.
When the system crashes - the amount of manual
labor to attempt to provide the same level of
service (well, as close to same level of service
as possible without having the technology in
place) plus the labor involved in recreating the
transactions that could not be captured
electronically.
trying to convince university and state
procurement officials that a)  yes, i really do
need to upgrade my hardware and software again
to stay profitable.  Yes, it really is about
profit - get over it. and b)  no, i can't just
use the generic software contract on campus that
"everybody else uses."  Parking is a specialized
field and requires specialized technology.  this
is the Reader's Digest condensed
Just when you think you have it all figured out,
something new and improved comes along and makes
you wonder if what you just purchased is really
as good as you thought it was.
It's very difficult to pull any kind of special
reports to manage garage usage.
A large percentage of the time the technology is
smarter than the customer.
The other problem with the gating equipment seems
to be with the software.
the garage gating equipment
its never simple. Someone always has to make it
more complicated then it should be. Palms,
Software, Gates... its always a challenge
PARKING TECHNOLOGY.   It's gotten so that if you
don't have an IT person on staff your either
underutilizing the technology or you are using
trial and error to learn it.
Creating a single source for parking information
Integration of wireless payment options into
existing systems.
...is when the President's or Vice-Presidents'
gate cards won't raise the gate.   lt)
keeping everyone happy
The technology does not work as
advertised/prescribed.
Make it idiot-proof and somebody will build a
better idiot.

Complexities
6
Why Unify
  • Parking Operations need credibility in order to
be effective and provide valued services.
  • Credibility is earned through good record-keeping
    over a long time.
  • Data is your friend
  • Analog data is very costly.
  • Digital data is cheap!

My Philosophy
  • Technology
  • is best
  • when it
  • is invisible

21
The Proprietary Challenge
Duncan Multi-Space Meter
VenTek Pay-By-Space
T2 Hand Held
22
Interface
  • The place at which independent and often
unrelated systems meet and act on or communicate
    with each other

23
Integrate
  • To form, coordinate, or blend into a functioning
    or unified whole

24
Organizational Philosophy
  • Technology at the table
  • Software guru - knows the technical side and the
    business side inside out
  • Use the software
  • Hardware becomes less important
  • Business analyst might be more appropriate
  • Developers
  • Power users

25
Organization
  • Who acts as your Chief Information Officer (CIO)?
  • Director
  • Assistant director
  • The IT guy
  • Admin assistant
  • Division IT

26
Digital Parking System
  • Summarized The digital parking system is one
that stores electronic records of all things
related to parking, from any source, forever.
  • From the previous slides this includes
  • Images
  • Audio clips
  • Video clips
  • Communications
  • Device diagnostics
  • Others?
