History
  • Formed in April 2002 by combining two similar
    groups.
  • Two groups had served the community for almost 10
    years.
  • Represents the community and the chemical
    industry.
  • Sponsored by Union Carbide Corporation, a
    wholly-owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical
    Company (Dow Chemical), Bayer Polymers, FMC
    Corporation and Elementis Specialties.

Purpose
  • To increase lines of communication between the
    companies and the community.
  • Forum for open discussion.
  • Serves as a mechanism for public questions,
    comments and concerns.

Meetings and Activities
  • Meets 10 times annually on the second Monday of
    each month
  • Does not meet in July
  • Holiday dinner in December
  • Topics are selected by the group
  • Projects are selected that enhance the quality of
    life in the community

Company Products
  • Dow Chemical manufactures chemicals and
    plastics from the derivatives of natural gas and
    petroleum including antifreeze, brake fluids,
    hydraulic and metal working fluids, automotive
    moldings, car wash applications, carpet pads and
    foam padding, chewing gum, liquid detergents and
    all-purpose cleaners, personal care products,
    pharmaceutical applications, paints, primer,
    coatings adhesives, and a variety of other
    products.

  • Bayer Polymers produces polyols, a polyurethane
    raw materials used in consumer products, such as
    automotive seating foam, furniture foam, as well
    as footwear and recreational items.

  • FMC currently is mothballed, but is operating
    as a distribution and purification facility using
    hydrogen peroxide manufactured at a Texas
    facility.

  • Elementis built in 1974, the facility
    manufactures organoclay based thickening agents
    (rheological additives) used to improve the
    performance and appearance of paints, cosmetics,
    greases, inks and adhesives.

Emergency Preparedness
  • Emergency Alert System
  • Tune to your local TV or radio station for
    details.
  • Stay off the phone to ensure lines are open for
    emergency purposes. Only use the phone to report
    an actual emergency where you are that needs
    response.
  • Sirens tested the fourth Wednesday of each month.
  • Kanawha Putnam Emergency Planning Committee
    (KPECP) is responsible for ensuring the community
    has the proper emergency plans in place and that
    the plans are put into practice.

  • A sustainable community is one that operates to
    meet the needs of todays society without
    jeopardizing the availability of future
    generations to meet their needs.
  • The Panel has embarked on a long-term project to
    make the South Charleston area a sustainable
    community.
