Title: The Structures of Seed Plants

1
The Structures of Seed Plants
  • Chapter 4 Section 4B

2
A Plants Food Factories
  • Leaf Function
  • Make food for the plant by capturing the energy
    in sunlight.
  • Absorbing carbon dioxide from the air
  • Allowing water to escape the plant

3
Leaf Structure
  • The top and bottom layer of the leaf is called
    epidermis.
  • Tiny pores in the epidermis are called stomata
and allow carbon dioxide to enter the leaf.
  • Guard cells open and close the stomata.
  • Green organelles in the leaf cell are
    chloroplasts and carry out photosynthesis.
  • The leaf contains xylem to transport water and
    phloem to transport sugar.

4
Leaf Adaptations
  • The cactus has modified leaves in the form of
    spines.
  • The sundew has leaves modified to catch insects.

5
Flowers adaptation for reproduction
  • Sepals cover and protect the immature flower.
  • Petals attract insects to aid in reproduction
  • Stamens male reproductive part
  • Anthers area of the stamen where pollen is
    produced
  • Pistils female reproductive part
  • Stigma area where the pollen collects
  • Ovary rounded base of the pistil containing the
ovules each which contain an egg.

6
Section Review
  • Describe the internal structure of a typical
leaf. How is a leafs structure related to its
    function?
  • Which flower structure produces pollen?
  • Compare the functions of xylem and phloem in
    roots, stems, leaves, and flowers.
