1Implementation of animal welfare labelling in the
EU the consumer perspective The Federation
of German Consumer Organisations - vzbv -
umbrella for 40 German consumer organisations-
represent the interests of consumers in public
and vis-à-vis legislators, the private sector
and civil societyOur goal is - to protect and
empower the consumer We do this by - lobbying
and campaigning at national and European levels
- taking collective legal action on behalf of
consumers and professional training for the
staff of consumer organisations
- Jutta Jaksche, Policy Officer Agriculture, vzbv,
Berlin
2What is missing?
A raising amount of consumers want animal
friendly produced products, but efforts in animal
husbandry are not transparent, information not
reliable. A raising amount of producers want to
achieve an added value for additional efforts
(quality strategy). The market instruments for
these criteria are insufficient (products are not
labelled in a convincing way, production systems
are not assessed and not labelled for the
producer as well)
3Quality standards
- Obligatory labelling system (analogue to the egg
labelling) - does not fit to european legislation (non EU-
standard) - fit to european legislation (also equivalence is
given) - first premium level
- second premium level
- Inspection authorithy (similar to the Swiss
guide) - which helps - producers to develop animal
friendly systems and farmers to invest in such
systems - Additional marketing initiatives on the basis of
f.e. breeding efforts, regional specifics.
