The Tlingit of the Northwest
  • Lived along the Northwest Coast.
  • This area includes Alaska Canada.
  • They lived near forests, rivers, the Pacific
    Ocean
  • They traveled in canoes to trade fish, furs,
    shells, carvings, woven blankets.

Tlingit Housing
  • The Tlingits built large plank houses.
  • They used cedar, maple, spruce trees to build
    their houses.
  • Huge totem poles stood in front of each home.

The Tlingit families
  • Each house was home to several families.
  • When a boy was 8 years old, he would live with
    his uncle. His uncle taught him how to hunt.
  • Mothers grandmothers taught girls how to weave
    blankets make baskets.

The Navajo of the Southwest
  • One of the largest of the Native American tribes
    in the U.S.
  • Navajo lived in the canyons mountains of
    Arizona, New Mexico, Utah.
  • About 200,000 Navajo live on the Navajo
    reservation today.

  • Long ago, they wore clothes made from deerskin.
  • Later, they wore more colorful clothing made from
    wool.
  • They strapped cradleboards to their backs so they
    could carry their babies.
  • They made jewelry made from silver, leather,
    turquoise.

  • The Navajo planted harvested corn, potatoes,
    wheat, fruit.
  • Sheep were the main source of food.
  • Meat was used to make soup with vegetables.
  • They also made fry bread from the wheat for most
    meals.

  • Navajo built lodges called hogans that were made
    from sticks logs and packed with mud.
  • It was one giant room that was 20 to 3 feet
    across.
  • It had a smoke hole in the center of the roof.

    beautiful blankets, clothing, rugs.
  • Men hunted wild animals for food and clothing.

  • The Sioux roamed the plains of North America in
    search of buffalo.
  • The Sioux Nation was made up of 3 main tribes
    Lakota, Nakota, Dakota

  • Sioux clothing was made from buffalo hide other
    animal skins. They dyed the skins many different
    colors.
  • Women wore fringed dresses men wore fringed
    shirts breechcloths.
  • Both men women wore moccasins.

  • Buffalo was the main food for the Sioux. They ate
    fresh buffalo meat they dried it to store for
    the winter.
  • Women and children also gathered berries, roots,
    herbs, wild turnips.

  • The Sioux lived in tipis that were easy to put
    together and take apart.
  • They could take their home with them follow the
    buffalo.
  • It was made from buffalo hides sewn together.
    They decorated it with symbols.
  • The tipi could hold six people.

  • The name Iroquois means People of the
    Longhouse.
  • The Iroquois lived in the area we know today as
    Quebec and NewYork.

  • Most Iroquois clothing was made from deerskin.
  • It was decorated with colorful beads and quills.
  • Both men and women wore moccasins.

  • The Iroquois tribe were farmers. The 3 most
    important crops were corn, beans, squash.
  • They also hunted game, fished, gathered fruits
    and nuts.

  • The Iroquois built long, narrow buildings called
    longhouses.
  • A longhouse was home to many families.
  • It had two levels, the top for storing belongings
    and the lower level was for sleeping.

  • The Iroquois formed a Great Council to decide
    important matters.
  • They used beads called wampum for trading.
  • Boys learned to hunt, trap, fish.
  • Girls learned how to plant seeds, cook, make
    clothing.

The Seminole of the Southeast
  • The Seminole people were once part of the Creek
    tribe.
  • Many moved to Florida when the European settlers
    arrived.
  • They became known as the Seminole.

  • The Seminole wore colorful cotton clothing.
  • Women wore long-sleeved blouses skirts that
    touched the floor.
  • Seminole men wore colorful shirts. They wore
    turbans, leggings, breechcloths.

  • The Seminole planted corn, beans, squash.
  • They also fished caught alligators in Florida
    swamps.
  • They hunted deer, bear, raccoon, squirrel,
    birds.
  • Each family also planted their own garden.

  • Some Seminoles built their homes on the ground
    Seminoles who lived in the swamps built wooden
    huts called chickees.
  • A chickee had no walls so families could sleep
    inside and feel the cool breeze.
  • At night, each person slept in a hammock inside
    the chickee.

Seminole Life
  • Seminole women took care of the children, sewed,
    cooked, worked in the garden.
  • Seminole men hunted, fished, farmed.
  • Each summer the Seminole prepared for an
    important festival called the Green Corn Dance.
