  • Chemicals that can burn skin
  • Sharp objects
  • Rotating hazards
  • Dont take chances with your safety
  • A little care now can prevent disabling accidents

3
Safe Practices 1
  • Always use eye protection when working on a car
  • Eyes cannot be replaced
  • Acid and hot water can permanently rob your sight
  • Tuck in loose clothing, hair, and necklaces when
    working around the engine

4
Safe Practices 2
  • Dont run a car in closed areas
  • Carbon monoxide is deadly and is odorless
  • Whenever possible, work with someone nearby
  • Use the right tool for the right bolt
  • Be careful when working on a hot car
  • Exhaust temperatures can be up to 1000 F
  • Coolant temperatures are 192 - 200 F

5
Safe Practices 3
  • Stay clear of moving parts
  • Always use jackstands when working under a car
  • Chock wheels when working on a car
  • When reinstalling a tire, always check the
lugnuts after the tire is on the ground

6
Safe Practices 4
  • Dont allow anyone to ride on the outside if the
    car.
  • Dont spin the wheels (burn out)
  • Make sure the car is in neutral before starting
    it
  • Always know how to properly start, operate, and
shut down all equipment you use.

7
General Shop Safety
  • Dont use electrical cords while standing in
    water
  • Wipe up any spills immediately
  • Use both hands when disconnecting an air hose
  • Know where the nearest fire extinguisher is
    located

8
Safety with Coolant
  • When opening a radiator cap, use gloves and a
    face shield
  • Stand to one side in case there is still pressure
    in the system
  • Never open a hot radiator
  • Antifreeze is toxic
  • Dont dump antifreeze down the drain

9
Battery Safety 1
  • When working on the cars electrical system,
disconnect the ground cable of the battery
  • When jumping a car, connect the positive to
positive (red cable), then the negative to the
    vehicle ground
  • When replacing a battery, remove the ground cable
    first and reinstall it last
  • Always use safety gear when working with the
    battery

10
Battery Safety 2
  • When carrying a battery, use a carrier strap to
    prevent damage to yourself
  • Do not remove a charger cable while the charger
is still on, testing it, or jumpering (risk of
    explosion)

11
Engine Safety
  • When starting an engine, do not look down the
    carburetor.
  • Only pour fuel down the carburetor (priming) when
    the engine is off.
  • When using the spark plug cleaner, make sure a
spark plug is in place before activating it.

12
Brake System Safety
  • Whenever work is done on brakes or suspension
parts, the work must be checked by the
    Instructor.
  • Do not blow off the dust on brakes. It contains
    asbestos, which is dangerous.
  • Wash brake shoes in an approved container which
will prevent the dust from becoming airborne

13
Fire Extinguisher Types
  • Class A
  • Burning wood or material
  • Class B
  • Liquids or grease
  • Class C
  • Electrical fires
  • Multipurpose
  • Can be used for all fires (A, B, C)

14
Use of Arc Welding Equipment
  • We will not be using welding equipment in this
    class, but
  • Dont look at an arc welder in operation
  • The light can blind you or cause painful eye
    damage

15
Use of the Welding Torch
  • Torch welding can be dangerous
  • Never set the acetylene higher than 15 PSI
  • Turn the acetylene valve ¼ turn
  • The flame can reach 2500 F
  • When opening the tank valves, stand to one side
    and open them slowly
  • Dont oil any regulators. It can create an
    explosive mixture.

16
Use of the Lift
  • Always have someone guide you when you drive on
    the lift
  • Make sure the area is clear before raising or
    lowering the lift
  • Dont work under the lift unless the safety
    devices are engaged

17
Safety When Drilling
  • Use pliers to hold the object you are drilling or
    grinding instead of your hands
  • Dont wear loose gloves
  • Dont remove any guards or shields
  • Remove the chuck key before turning the drill on
  • During drilling, ease up on pressure you exert at
the end of the hole to prevent drill seizing

18
Safety When Grinding
  • Hold objects on the steady rest
  • Dont use heavy pressure when cleaning with the
    wire wheel
  • Use pliers instead of your hands where possible

19
Safety When Cleaning
  • Never use gasoline to clean parts.
  • Rags use to wipe parts should be stored in a
metal container with a cover on it.

20
