Process
  • You and your team have been selected to man a
mission to a planet in our solar system. Your
job is to gather information about the planet and
bring it back to earth so that we can make plans
to develop a colony or space station on or around
the planet. On your team there is a graphic
designer, a Captain, an architect, and an
Information technologist. Each of you will have
    a specific task to complete.

Introduction
Task
Process
  • The captain of the flight is responsible for
coming up with the best flight plan to the
planet. This plan should be type written and
professional looking. You have plenty to
research so look further to see what information
needs to be on your flight plan. You will also
need to draw and label a picture of the space
craft that will be able to make the journey.
  • The Graphic Designer is to create a brochure to
attract future colonists to the planet. It
should be created on a computer with plenty of
graphics. After all, if it looks boring, people
wont want to go!!! In a way, this is should be
an advertisement for the job of a lifetime!!!
  • The architect will be making a large poster or
model depicting what the space station or colony
will look like. He or she will need to choose
the best location for the settlement, and make
adaptations so that humans can live and thrive
    there.
  • The information technologist will make a slide
show to show the conditions and history of the
planet. It will be at least 10 slides and be
both informative and creative. We will use this
slide show to show to potential financial
contributors whose support is necessary to fund
    this mission.

Captain
  • Your flight plan and drawing needs to answer the
    following questions
  • How far away is your planet? How long will it
take you to get there and back? How big of a
crew will you need to man this mission? What
supplies will you and the crew need for this
voyage? Consult with the architect to
determine what places on the planet you will
want to observe for possible settlement sites.
How much money will this mission cost? What
route will you take to reach this planet? What
will your spaceship look like? What features
will the spaceship need in order to transport you
safely to and from the planet? What kind of fuel
    will you need?

Graphic Designer
  • Your brochure should answer the following
    questions for prospective employees
  • How many colonists will be needed? How long
will they be there for? Consult with the
architect and captain to find a place to live
that will appeal to the colonists. What kind of
things will be available for entertainment and
leisure time? What physical activities will be
required of the colonists? What kinds of people
are you looking for to populate the colony? What
features of the planet will be most appealing to
people? What kinds of jobs will the colony need
to thrive? What kind of benefits await the
people willing to take this job? Do you want
just professionals, or would you like families?
What will be available to ensure safety to the
    colonists?

Architect
  • Your Drawing and plans for the settlement should
    answer the following questions
  • Where will the safest sight for the settlement
be? Come up with 3 possible spots on or near
you planet where conditions would be best for the
survival of the colony. What kind of material
can you find on the planet to aid with
construction? What supplies would need to be
taken for construction of the settlement or space
station. How long would it take to build the
station? What features will the station need to
protect it from harmful elements? Does the
planet have moons that may be more suitable to
colonize than the planet itself? How can we make
the environment more suitable for humans? What
would have to exist for human habitation?

8
Information Technologist
  • The following information should be included in
    your PowerPoint presentation
  • How was the planet discovered? How did the
planet get its name? Who was it named after?
What is the atmosphere like? What is it composed
of? What materials make up the solid part of the
planet? What is the surface of the planet like?
Is there any kind of weather? What, if any,
    geological processes are occurring? What
geological features can be found on this planet
(if any)? How do scientists think they were
formed? What (if any) moons exist in orbit
around the planet? What are the moons like? Is
it possible that one of the moons could be
inhabited? What do we need in order to make an
environment on the planet suitable for humans?
Could it ever be possible for humans to live on
    or near the planet?
