    modeled on popular television programs
  • The rise in wartime and fall in peacetime of
    popularity of war toys, comic books, and uniforms
  • The use of comic characters to sell vitamins,
    breakfast food, and shoes
  • More than in other ages, children seem to be
    passive recipients of the culture

  • Dancing and MTV
  • Concerts and television specials
  • Ipods, Mp3 Players
  • Satellite radios and CD players -nothing
    characterizes and bonds together teenagers in
    American culture like popular music
  • However, teens are less passive than children

  • They may respond to marketing and promotion, but
    they also choose what they like
  • Teens are the largest part of the movie market
    and a prime target audience for television
    programming
  • Identification is important so they gather at the
    right places, wear the right clothing, and drink
    the right beverages
  • In a sense, teens are popular culture-in ways
    that change and yet continue to form a behavior
    style with independent character

  • Most adult singles do not fit the image of the
    playboy and playgirl with 2,000 CDs and records,
    a sports car, the latest clothes, and a trip to
    the sun every other month
  • Beginning incomes make that level of consumption
    only a frustrated dream for most

  • But the transition from teen to established adult
    includes a period of experimentation and courting
    of life styles as well as of a marriage partner
  • Magazines, automobiles, and weekend entertainment
    are all part of the culture of being adult and
    single
  • One aim is to employ the culture symbols that
    present a self that will be accepted in the
    social milieu where hoped-for relationships can
    be formed

  • The more home-centered leisure of parents shifts
    popular culture interests to "adult" television
    entertainment, the broad range of couple-group
    activities in the community, and symbols of
    social establishment

  • Popular culture outside the home is more likely
    to mean McDonalds than a rock festival and Fourth
    of July fireworks and picnics than the scene
    "where a lady may buy a gentleman a drink"
