Out of the tragedy of the September 11th 2001
attacks on the World Trade Center
grew Camilla Hellmans idea for the British
Memorial Garden, New York
A place of reflection and remembrance, serving as
a memorial to the 67 British victims of the
attacks

The British Memorial Garden is a gift to the City
and people of New York
It is a symbol of British-American friendship and
unity              
A place to celebrate British culture and heritage

British Memorial Trust, Inc., was formed as a 501
(c)(3) New York State charity in May 2003, and
approved by NYC Parks Recreation in March 2004
In support, the British Memorial Garden Trust,
(UK), Ltd. was launched in April 2004

September 2003 saw a viewing at Phillips de Pury
Luxembourg of designs for garden and sculpture
Renowned sculptor Anish Kapoor will create
Unity to anchor the British Memorial Garden

Landscape architects Isabel and Julian Bannerman
won a juried competition to design the garden

Unique features of the garden include topiaries
with bronze armatures
benches made of Portland Stone and a Water Rill
made of Welsh slate
a Ribbon of Counties made from Morayshire stone
City of London-style bollards bearing the
shields of leading Societies in New York
and a Memorial Railing to the 67 British victims
of the World Trade Center attacks

On the Memorial Railing are the emblems of the
United Kingdom The Rose, Thistle, Daffodil and
Flax
In Caithness, British sculptor Simon Verity works
on the Ribbon of the Counties

Royal patronage
In October 2003, the Royal Patronage of HRH The
Prince of Wales was announced at Christies
HRH Princess Anne officially launched the garden
in April 2003 with a presentation to NY Parks
Commissioner Adrian Benepe of heirloom seeds from
Royal gardens

Work began on the garden in late 2004 and the
official groundbreaking took place in May 2005

Further royal visits
HRH The Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York
attended the September 11 Memorial Concert in
Hanover Square in 2006
HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of
Cornwall unveiled the Center Stone and
dedicated the garden in November 2005

Garden include
Tartan Week in April
Twilight in the Garden, the Gala Dinner and
major fund raiser held every February

Building work at Hanover Square progressed well
during 2006 and into 2007

and Spring 2007 heralded the planting of the
first trees in the park
These majestic yews will become the fashioned and
clipped topiaries that are the key design element
of the garden, as envisioned by the British
Memorial Gardens designers, Isabel and Julian
Bannerman

With infrastructure and hardscape complete, the
garden is already being enjoyed by the public
In the fall, over 7,000 bulbs were planted in
the garden for springtime color in 2008
