Philosophy
  • This is a summer school and we will be giving
homework and expecting you to study. At the same
time we will make every effort to connect with
Chinese people and with the culture. Since it is
expected that you will be curious about China we
have organized the Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)
excursion as early as possible in the program.
We have also left three days at the end for you
to explore Hangzhou and its environs. Please
respect the needs of classmates to study and use
    you own time wisely.

7
Yellow Mountain ??
This is a three day trip. We will visit two
historic villages, the Nine Dragon waterfall and
the top of Yellow Mountain. You may ride the
cable car to the top or walk up. The walk up is
strenuous, but very scenic. I strongly recommend
everyone ride the cable car down (think of your
knees!).
8
Campus Life
  • The campus is a guarded compound. This will not
affect you, but it does mean that it is a
    relatively safe and peaceful environment.
  • You will not be asked for an ID to enter campus.
There are stores with all of the basic
    necessities including converters.
  • Food can also be purchased on campus. There are
a number of restaurants including one in the
    International College.

9
Electrical Devices
  • China uses 220V/50 cycles.
  • The adapter of all computers can handle a 220V
input. Conversion to DC means that the cycles
per second will not affect your machine.
  • Other appliances may require a transformer.
There is no way to correct to 60 cycles. If your
needs are simple (e.g. hair dryer) it will be
cheaper (and more reliable) to buy a hair dryer
than to buy a converter and bring your hair
    dryer.
  • We require that you buy a cell phone. You can
buy minutes. The cell phones are only for use to
find each other so you will not use a large
    number of minutes.

10
Communication
  • For local contact you will have cell phones.
  • Calling the United States.
  • 1. You may purchase a calling card. These can be
relatively inexpensive (less than 10 cents per
    minute) if you shop around.
  • 2. Use Skype on your computer. You can buy a
headset with a microphone in Hangzhou for around
    5. Computer-to-computer Skype is FREE.
Computer-to-phone is 2 cents per minute.

11
Travel Advice
  • 1. Always keep your passport with you.
  • You never know when you will need it.
  • 2. ATMs are the easiest we to access money.
Exchange in banks is painfully slow.
  • 3. Have a backup. A credit card with a cash
advance. Clearly this is only for emergencies.
    Cash is also good backup!
  • 4. Travel as light as you can.
  • 5. Currency (Renminbi or Yuan)
  • Exchange rate is 7.00 at present (be happy)

12
Survival Chinese
  • There is a survival Chinese phrase and word list
that will be sent to everyone. I recommend that
you print out key phrases and write the pinyin
and the translation. Walk around with flash
cards. You will learn, but you can also use the
characters to communicate. I will give an
    example.
