Overview
  • What is Cardiovascular Disease?
  • CVD statistics
  • Types of CVD
  • Causes of CVD
  • Symptoms of CVD
  • Treatment
  • CVD prevention

3
What is CVD?
  • A broad term used to describe a range of diseases
that affect your heart or blood vessels.

4
Statistics
  • The 1 cause of death for males and females for
    the entire world.
  • Every 34 seconds a person in the United States
    dies from CVD.
  • In 2005, an estimated 80,700,000 have one or more
    forms of CVD.
  • In 2004, CVD killed 869,724 people- cancer killed
    553,888.

5
Random Statistics
  • Male pattern baldness, hair in ear canals, and
creased ear lobes are associated with a higher
    risk for CVD.
  • People who eat beans at least 4 times a week have
a 19 lower risk of CVD then people who eat beans
    less than once a week.

6
Types of CVD
  • Can be placed in 4 categories
  • 1) Coronary Artery Disease
  • 2) Heart Muscle Damage
  • 3) Rhythm Disorders
  • 4) Valve Abnormalities

7
Atherosclerosis
  • Inner walls of the arteries become more narrow
due to a buildup of plaque.
  • Types- Coronary heart disease, and Angina
    Pectoris

8
High Blood Pressure
  • Also known as hypertension
  • Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing
    against the blood vessel walls.
  • High blood pressure is when the pressure in your
arteries is consistently above the normal range.
  • 140mmHg/ 90mmHg

9
Heart Attack
  • Blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked.
  • If blood flow is completely cut off the part of
the heart muscle supplied by the artery begins to
    die.

10
Heart Failure
  • The heart is not pumping blood as well as it
should, denying the body of the proper blood and
    oxygen it needs.
  • This causes the heart to enlarge, or
    cardiomyopathy.

11
Causes of CVD
  • Gender
  • Genes/Heredity
  • Smoking
  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Sedentary lifestyle/ lack of exercise
  • Stress
  • High blood pressure

12
CVD Warning Signs
  • Chest pain/ chest discomfort
  • Palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Syncope
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath

13
CVD Treatment
  • Blood pressure reducing and cholesterol-lowering
    medications.
  • Angioplasty- non-invasive
  • Bypass surgery
  • Implanted Pacemaker
  • Implanted Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)
  • Heart transplant

14
CVD Prevention
  • Know your blood pressure, and keep it under
    control.
  • Know your risks due to heredity.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Dont smoke.
  • Get tested for diabetes, and if you have it, keep
    it under control.

15
CVD Prevention
  • Know your cholesterol levels, and keep them under
    control.

if you are an at risk candidate.

16
Conclusion
  • Cardiovascular disease is a serious problem, and
the number one cause of death in the world.
  • The 4 types of CVD are coronary artery disease,
heart muscle damage, rhythm disorders, and valve
    abnormalities.

17
Conclusion
  • CVD may not always be preventable but understand
the causes, and your personal risk factors.
  • If you feel you are symptomatic of CVD consult a
    doctor immediately.
  • Be a healthier person! Changing daily habits may
substantially decrease your risk of CVD.
