• Arctic Ocean freshwater studies
• Understanding variability of steric sea level in
  N.Atlantic (Antonov, JGR)
• Freshwater export controls timing and location
  of convection, and thus MOC
• Freshwater content/flux depends on NAO/AO,
  Arctic sea ice thinning etc.
• Studied previously at Fram Strait using oxygen
  isotope data (Meredith et al., GRL) and barium
  data (Taylor et al., JGR), but need much better
  spatial coverage and temporal resolution
• How do we extend sampling capability?
• Under-ice sampling moorings (e.g. adapted HOMER)
• Talk to people who have icebreakers and/or
  moorings already in place
• Submarines
• Etc?
• How could we fund this and link it externally?
• ASOF (Nordic Seas) already bid via EU FP6
• RAPID 2nd call, deadline December
• iAnZone interested in freshwater, linking in to
  IPY
• POL core programme?
