Title: Biogas Technology

1
Biogas Technology
  • Decentralised Energy Production
  • Basics and
  • Current Situation in Germany

2
Possible input materials
  • Energy production from biomass
  • Agriculture Slurry and solid waste
  • Slaughterhouses organic waste and sewage waste
    (e.g. blood, fat and offals)
  • Agro-industry e.g. Sisal, pulpe from fruit juice
    production
  • Dairy Whey, waste water
  • Energy plants
  • Organic waste from municipals
  • Sludge from waste water treatment.

3
What happens in the biogas digester?
  • Biological degradation in a digestor under
    anaerobic condition
  • Thus transformation into Biogas (Methane)
  • Utilisation in a CHPS (combined heat and power
    station) into electricity and heat
  • Production of organic fertilizer

4
Law in Germany
  • Electricity is purchased by national grid
  • Prices for renewable energy are determined by law
  • The law is valid for 20 year
  • The energy producer receives 0,10 US for each
    kWh

5
Current situation in Germany
  • There are approx. 1.500 Biogas plants in
    operation
  • Capacity between 15 kW and 3.000 kW
  • Average ca. 50 KW (equiv. 1000 Lamps with 50W)
  • At present the total power capacity is approx.
    150.000 kW (150 MW)

6
Situation in Kenya
  • Unreliable Energy supply
  • Pollution from waste water and organic waste
  • The organic waste is hardly used
  • Electricity is partly produced from imported
    fossil fuel

7
Advantages for Kenya
  • Environmental relief
  • Reduction of environmental pollution
  • Use of gas oil reduced
  • Waste water and sewage treated
  • Energy production from renewable energy
  • Heat production
  • Organic production of fertilisersch
  • Nationa grid is stabilised
  • Generation of employment in a future field
