The Multidimensional Multiscale Parser algorithm
  • The MMP (Multidimensional Multiscale Parser)
    algorithm is a universal data compression
    algorithm based on multiscale recurrent pattern
    matching
  • It uses a dictionary of patterns that is
    adaptively built while the input data is encoded.
  • The dictionary is updated by the inclusion of
    concatenations (in a Lempel-Ziv fashion) of
    dilated/contracted versions of input blocks
    previously encoded.
  • It is able to achieve good compression
    performances for a wide range of signal types.

  • It as been successfully used in the compression
    of other signals (e.g. voice, stereoscopic
    images). Our group has recently worked on
    MMP-based ECG compression, with state-of-the-art
    compression results.

  • Recently, an hybrid video encoder that uses MMP
    to compress the predicted residue was proposed.
    MMP-video achieves better results than H.264/AVC,
    especially for B slices and high compression
    ratios.
