DDT in Oman
  • In the Sultanate of Oman, DDT was being used in
    Malaria programme since early seventies.
  • It was used ONLY for indoor spraying.

DDT in Oman
  • Since 1992, the use of DDT for
  • malaria vector control has been
  • stopped completely and replaced by
  • organophosphates and synthetic
  • pyrethroids.

DDT ( 94 -98 )
  • A small amount of DDT was
  • occasionally used (1994-1998) for a
  • few isolated cases of Leishmania for
  • controlling sand flies.

DDT Donation
  • All the available stock of about 7700 kgs of DDT
    (technical) and 17000 kgs 75 DDT (WWP) has been
    donated to other country in the month of May
    1998, for their malaria control programme and no
    further amount of DDT was available in Oman.

DDT Monitoring Data
  • Partial susceptibility and total
  • immunity of malaria vectors were
  • reported during the trial in 1992
  • from different areas .
  • Sandflies are found to be 100 susceptible to
    DDT .

Legal Mechanism for DDT management
  • 6 . DDT is banned by the Ministerial
  • decision ( 316 / 2001 ) ,The directorate of
  • Chemical substances implemented the
  • decision according to Royal Decree
  • ( 46 / 95 ).

National umbrella act and relevant international
treaties
  • Oman is Party to the Stockholm Convention since
    2005 to Basel Convention since 1994 and to the
    Rotterdam Convention since 1999. All three
    conventions are addressing also DDT. However, the
    remaining DDT stocks were exported from Oman
    already in may 1998.
  • Royal Decree No. (46/95) issued the Law on
    Handling and use of Chemicals, which is
    considered as umbrella law for all chemicals.

Enforcement legislation / enforcement capacity
  • MD (317/2001), MD (248/97), MD (316/2001) are
    regulating packing and labeling and registration
    of hazardous chemicals and prohibition of DDT
    respectively.
  • According to the MOH Malaria Eradication
    strategy, the use of DDT for malaria control is
    prohibited since 1992 due to vector resistance.
  • Regulation (Guidelines of safe chemical
    handling, civil Defense Dept) of the ROP sets
    policy of hazardous chemical transportation,
    according to which also DDT had to be transported
    (Article No.6 )

Substitution to DDT
  • During the years 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and
    1999, we have used Sumithion 40 WP
    (organophosphorous) as indoor house spraying
    where 4090, 5042, 552, 974, 242, and 89 kgs were
    consumed respectively

Substitution to DDT
  • During the years 1996 , 1997 , 1998 , 99 ,
  • 2000 we have used ICON 10WP
  • ( Lambda-cyhalothrin synthetic Pyrethroid )
  • as indoor spraying where 3.8 , 448 , 560 ,
  • 244 , and 77.4 kg were consumed respectively .
