Offshore Wind Key Facts
  • The UK, and Scotland especially, is a large
    market for renewable energy generation through
    its wind, wave, tidal, and bio-mass resources.
  • The market demand for energy from these resources
    is driven by UK Government and Scottish
    Government aspirations and targets, linked to
    agreements made within the Kyoto Protocols a
    world-wide agreement to reduce carbon emissions.
    These set targets to 2015, with aspirations until
    at least 2020.
  • Scotland's potential offshore wind generating
    capacity is 25GW, with an average capacity figure
    of over 40 (which means that 40 of the time an
    offshore wind turbine will produce electricity at

  • There are currently 2 offshore wind farms
    underconstruction in Scotland, one of which,
    Robins Rigg, when completed will be the largest
    in the UK (180MW).
  • Scotland is leading the world in the development
    of deep water offshore wind farm deployment and
    construction with the Beatrice Offshore Wind
    Demonstrator project. This is using the largest
    turbines ever deployed offshore (5MW) in the
    deepest water (45M) and furthest from the shore
    (23km).
  • Talisman Energy and Scottish Southern Energy
    are planning to expand the Beatrice project to a
    1GW wind farm (ie 200 wind turbines).

  • At 59.1 GW, Scotlands potential renewable
    resources are very large. Scotlands domestic
    electric energy requirement is approximately 10.5
    GW so theres a large potential to export

    serving offshore market in the rest of the UK.

    Oil Gas Industry

    development agencies are assisting further
    diversification in to renewable energy sector
    activity.

    competitive wage rates and social taxation costs.

    blade manufacturing facilities.

Opportunities in Offshore Wind Power in Scotland
  • Scotland has over 3000 Wind Turbines in wind
    farms which are currently going through the
    Scottish planning system which will generate
    7.2GW. The development and construction of these
    turbines poses a huge opportunity for companies
    in the component supply chain as well as those
    involved in operation and maintenance. The
    creation of this onshore market facilitates the
    further development of offshore turbine
    manufacture, construction and fabrication
    centres.
  • The UK offshore market for projects in Round 1
    2 amounts to 8.4GW of energy to service these
    major projects companies will require large sites
    with deep water access to facilitate
    transportation of components to the construction
    sites. Scotland has several available ex-oil and
    gas yards with extensive acreage and deep water
    load-out facilities such Nigg, Arnish and Methil.
  • These Scottish deep water sites are perfectly
    placed to service the European offshore wind
    market as they equidistant from the Northern and
    Southern European offshore wind markets in
    Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium and
    France.
  • The civil construction phase of these projects
    will pose a significant opportunity for major
    contractors and local construction supply chain.
  • Crown Estates are about to introduce (expected
    in 2008) the 3rd Round of site selection for
    further offshore wind projects. These projects
    are expected to be in the order of 500 to 1000
    MegaWatts per site. This is expected to raise
    the total offshore wind capacity in the UK to
    between 12-15GW.
  • Leading Scottish developers such as Scottish
    Power and Scottish Southern Energy are
    demanding more local Scottish content. The
    Scottish Government has introduced new planning
    guidelines (SPP6) which make local content a
    material consideration for planning consent.
  • UK Government will introduce increased Renewable
    Obligation Certificates (ROCs) for offshore
    wind from 1st April 2009 to further stimulate the
    offshore wind market. This will amount to 1.5
    ROCs per MegaWattHour.
