National Trends College Effect
  • Binge drinkers rise to 45 percent (from 23 to
    45)
  • Abstainers drop to 30 percent (from 50 to 30)

So
  • Binge drinkers almost double and
  • Abstainers decrease by nearly half

More National Trends Alcohol
  • 1st and second year students have more problems
than 3rd and 4th year students
  • Binge drinking appears to be down over the last
    several years
  • But students who high risk drink are drinking
    more

35
Implications / Action Steps
Continue high quality research like Provost Lisa

programs to educate students about alcohol
awareness.
36
Implications / Action Steps
students whose parents talked to them about
alcohol drank less and less frequently than those
who didn't receive a talk
37
Conclusion
  • We have to continue to conduct high quality
research in order to really understand what
trends are occurring among our students and what
impact our efforts are having on our students
    behavior.
  • Temple is not a party school
  • Our diversity and numbers makes us very
attractive to study for serious researchers
  • The use of drugs and alcohol does change over
    time
  • We have best practices and cutting edge
    prevention and intervention programs
  • The more we collaborate and use our strength in
numbers and capitalize on our areas of specialty
we can better measure the exact nature of our
efforts to combat drug and alcohol use
