Title: Kinard Junior High School Fort Collins, Colorado
1LEED Certification Not Sought Estimated at
the SILVER Level
Kinard Junior High SchoolFort Collins, Colorado
With the improvements in building envelope, use
of day lighting, and the geo exchange system we
are looking forward to this building being the
most energy efficient in the district. Even
exceeding Fossil Ridge High School.

- Sustainable Sites
- Storm Water Parking lots drain through
Bio-swales to Retention pond - Building Orientation East-West to maximize
natural day lighting. Main entrance on south
side to minimize ice on walks. - Water Efficiency
- Irrigation High uniformity irrigation coverage
based on Arizona New Mexico resort standards.
Fully automated controls with on-site weather
station. 50 reduction from other schools. - Landscape Artificial turf on main football/track
field. Other areas are native turf designed for
no supplemental water after 5 years. (High use
practice fields and ball diamonds are bluegrass).
- Water Low-.flow fixtures
- Energy and Atmosphere
- Thermal Control Geo Exchange system provides
cooling/heat to 85 of the building. Each class
room is individually controlled. - Energy Exceeds ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-1989.
Building was conservatively modeled at 28 kBtu
/sf/yr. - HVAC Natural Ventilation through operable
windows. Heat recovery on exhaust air. - Controls/Monitoring Building Energy management
System for HVAC and lighting systems. - Power Source 10KW Photovoltaic plus 100 wind
energy contracted - Lighting Daylight harvesting and solar tubes for
interior spaces. Stepped lighting on light
sensors with room control. Many classrooms and
common areas will need no artificial light during
daylight hours. - Materials and Resources
- Envelope High mass walls and tight building
envelope. R-20 walls, R-30 roof. Exterior walls
are typically Brick, air gap, 3 foam insulation,
block, drywall. - Waste Minimization As of February 2006 81 of
the construction waste has been recycled.

- Indoor Environmental Quality
- Indoor Environmental Quality CO2 monitors.
- Connection to Outside 99 of the space has views
to outside. 100 space has natural daylight as
part of the lighting design. - Benefits
- Connections to outside and natural day lighting
are beneficial for a learning atmosphere. - Any additional first costs will be recouped
through operational savings. - Lessons Learned
- District design standards meet or exceed LEED
certification levels. Monies that would have been
used to document LEED are used to further
incorporate sustainable approaches and methods. - The key to incorporating sustainability without
additional first costs is through integrated
design and better coordination.
