Agenda
  • Background
  • Training Gates
  • Deep Attack Operation at NTC
  • Personnel and Equipment Structure
  • Corps FECC Operations
  • FECC TTPs
  • Fire Support Challenges Lessons Learned

3
Army Senior Leaders Guidance
  • Challenge Corps Attack Aviation units with
    realistic mission profiles.
  • Include level of detail for planning and
executing at maximum gross weight, distances,
conducting FARP operations, and a rigorous
testing of pilot proficiency all the way up to
staff work at the Bde, Corps Staff (DOCC/FECC),
    and JAOC levels.
  • Get the USAF involved and make sure the effort
is joint from top to bottom.
  • Force CSAR/JCSAR play during the deep attack.
  • Replicate realistic threat as Aviation assets
    are crossing the FLOT.
  • Corps need DOCCs (FECC) to effectively interface
at the joint level and to assist in the planning
and conduct of the deep shaping fight.
  • CSAR, C2 GS Company and CH-47 (FATCOW) FARPs
should all be instilled in the training and
accompany deep attack missions as necessary.
  • Units should plan for Live Fire of all weapon
    systems.
  • Its time we quit fooling ourselves with BCTPs
and train to fight in the worst case environment
that we will likely face during upcoming
    conflicts.

4
Situation
  • The CSA has directed that Attack Aviation units
undergo a Focused Deep attack Rotation at the NTC
    on an annual basis.
  • FORSCOM has tasked XVIII Airborne Corps to be the
Force Provider for the first rotation.
  • XVIII Airborne Corps has tasked the 229th Attack
Helicopter Group, 1-229th AHB, XVIII Airborne
Corps FECC, and additional Corps enablers to
conduct the NTC 02-07 Focused Deep Attack
    Rotation.

5

  • Purpose Conduct CSA directed proof-of-principle
and prove Army is capable of planning,
    coordinating, synchronizing, and executing Deep
    Attacks (180km)
  • Method Deploy by all modes of transportation,
build combat power, and conduct combat operations
    integrating Joint, lethal, and non-lethal
    ISR/Delivery assets,
  • Endstate All Task Force Dragon Fire personnel
safely deploy to NTC, successfully execute all
training objectives, and safely return to home
station better postured to execute our wartime
    mission.

6
Training Objectives
  • Command and Control Corps Deep Operations

  • Integrate all available Joint ISR and Fire
    Support Assets
  • Validate FECC Battle Rhythm and Targeting
    Procedures
  • Conduct Cross-FLOT Deep Attacks
  • Conduct Deep Operations
  • Plan/Execute multiple Deep Attacks during same
    period of darkness
  • Sustain Deep Attacks over several periods of
    darkness
  • Conduct FARP operations to validate ability to
    sustain multiple re-attacks
  • Conduct CSAR operations
  • Conduct Lethal/Non-Lethal Fire Support for Deep
    Operations
  • Plan, Execute, and C2 lethal and non-lethal FS
    assets

Role of the FECC
  • To provide effects-based fires (lethal and
non-lethal) that are coordinated and synchronized
throughout the spectrum of the battlespace.
  • To set the conditions for a successful close
fight by shaping the battlespace through the
attack of enemy forces not yet engaged in the
    close fight.

Lessons learned
  • SEAD Targeting throughout the battlespace
  • (templated vs known ADA targets)
  • Determining EA locations and time of attacks
  • (shaping, intelligence collection)
  • Information management
  • (too much, not enough, duplicated, accurate)
  • Communicating over 200 miles by radio
  • (mountains, distance, weather)
  • Situation awareness at the Engagement Area
  • UAV management (G2 / ACE)
  • (missions, priorities, who controls it)

46
Future Deep Attack Operations
  • III Corps will participate in a rotation at NTC
    early in FY 03.
  • Need to incorporate this event in to a Red Flag
    Exercise
  • in the future.
  • Need to exercise all elements to include AOC,
    BCD, MLRS
  • ATACM (White Sands).
  • Need to conduct more Joint CSAR operations
    (Army / AF).
  • Need to ensure that JACKPOT / JSTARS is
    available as the
  • C2 platform for Aviation Deep Attacks across the
    FSCL.
