The Design of Campidoglio

• Pope Paul llls order of the installation of the
  statue of Marcus Arelius
• To show that his rule reflected virtues of the
  antecedent
• Piazza as the main venue of civic events and the
  stage for the bronze statue

• Design for the whole environment but not the
  square alone
• Piazza as outdoor room with 3 walls

The site and challenges

• The path leading from the hill down to the city
  was a muddy slope
• gt an entrance which matches the piazza
  was to be created
• The site was a piece of uneven plateau between
  the northern and southern peaks of the Capitoline
  hill
• gt Conversion to level paved area
• Dilapidated medieval Senators palace and
  quattrocento conservators palace with an
  accidental orientation of 80 between one another
• gtrestoration and replanning

The Oval Area

• Trapezoid square formed after the Palazzo Nuovo
  was erected to create symmetry
• Traditional pavements rectilinear patterns or
  bands radiating from centre
• Traditional solutions not adoptable to
  trapezoidal boundary
• Oval form never used before as the
  irregularfigure discourages its use
• Centrality and axiality in 1 form
