Title: The Roots of Emotion

1
The Roots of Emotion
2
Fundamental Emotions
  • First theorized by Darwin as emotions that are
    evolutionarily adaptive
  • Anywhere from 6-10
  • Certain facial expressions are constant across
    cultures.
  • These same expressions emerge very early in
    children (1-2 months)
  • Blind people make and understand these expressions

3
Facial Feedback Hypothesis
  • Emotions result from the physical feedback of how
our muscles, particularly those in our face, are
    acting.
  • Proprioception feedback about body states
  • If we get someone to make a facial expression,
    will they feel that emotion?

4
The simulation heuristic
  • Emotions tend to be stronger if we can imagine a
scenario where we would not have been
    rewarded/punished.
