is based on Conflict
  • Abnormality is result of problems in childhood
  • Model based on Freuds division of personality
  • Stages of development, oral, phallic, genital
  • Model suggests conflict anxiety may occur
    because ego not developed enough
  • Psychological disorders also come from conflict
which happens in a certain stage of development
  • Anxiety from conflicts repressed into unconscious
    mind
  • Stress and trauma in adulthood trigger
    repressed conflicts, leading to psychological
    disorders

Freud developed the Psychodynamic approach
  • Sigmund Freud developed this approach in the late
    1800s/early 1900s
  • Psycho refers to mind
  • dynamic refers to change or activity
  • This approach emphasises active nature of mental
    processes

4
This approach assumes
  • Human behaviour has unconscious causes
  • From birth, humans need to fulfil basic
    biological motivations
  • Childhood experiences are important influence on
    development of personality

5
Strengths Weaknesses
  • Unique approach, childhood experiences important
  • Offers method of therapy,
  • Psychoanalysis
  • Freuds claims based on subjective
    interpretations of patients dreams
  • Psycholanalysis takes long time expensive, and
may be inaccurate depending on patients memory
    and analysts interpretations

6
Psychoanalysis
  • Psychodynamic therapies such as Freudian
    psychoanalysis attempt to uncover unconscious
    processes
  • During psychoanalytic therapy, the aim is to
    create appropriate conditions
  • If a person can understand the reasons for the
current abnormal behaviour, then, according to
the assumption of this approach to treatment,
they should be better able to deal with both the
original problem and the current problems for
    which they sought treatment.

7
Evaluation
  • Psychoanalysis appears to benefit only certain
types of patients (particularly those who are
highly motivated and have a positive attitude to
therapy) and is less effective in patients with
    severe psychopathological problem.
