2
Repentance
  • Matt.32, Acts 238 Rom.24

3
Repent
  • Matt 32-3
  • 2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven
    is at hand!"
  • 3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet
    Isaiah, saying
  • "The voice of one crying in the
    wilderness
  • 'Prepare the way of the LORD

4
To repent means
  • Strong definition of New Testament words
  • 3340 - metanoeo (met-an-o-eh'-o)- to think
differently or to think afterwards, to reconsider
  • A combination of 2 Greek words
  • meta (met-ah') after (-ward), again,
  • plus
  • noeo (no-eh'-o) to exercise the mind (observe),
to comprehend, to heed, to consider, perceive,
    think, and understand.

5
A scriptural picture of true repentance
  • Matt 2128-31
  • "But what do you think? A man had two sons, and
he came to the first and said, 'Son, go, work
    today in my vineyard.'
  • 29 He answered and said, 'I will not,' but
afterward he regretted it and went.
  • 30 Then he came to the second and said likewise.
And he answered and said, 'I go, sir,' but he did
    not go.
  • 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?"
  • They said to Him, "The first."

6
The first son experienced
  • An emotional change of regret (that enabled
    him)
  • A change of his will
  • (his will said,I will not)
  • A change of direction
  • (he went)

7
The first son did the will of his father because
  • He changed his mind and conformed to the will of
    his father
  • So repentance is
  • A mental turn around
  • To have another mind
  • To think differently
  • To reverse a decision
  • To change an attitude
  • To change course or direction

8
Repentance is not just sorrow
  • 2 Cor 78-10
  • 8 For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I
do not regret it though I did regret it. For I
perceive that the same epistle made you sorry,
    though only for a while.
  • 9 Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry,
but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you
were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might
suffer loss from us in nothing.
  • 10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading
to salvation, not to be regretted but the sorrow
    of the world produces death.

9
Sorrow leads to Repentance, Repentance leads to
Truth
  • 2Tim.224-25
  • 24 And the Lord's servant must not quarrel
instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to
    teach, not resentful.
  • 25 Those who oppose him he must gently instruct,
in the hope that God will grant them repentance
leading them to a knowledge of the truth,
  • 26 and that they will come to their senses and
escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken
them captive to do his will.

10
Sorrow is
  • Sadness, grief, heaviness
  • The work of regret or remorse
  • Sadness because of exposure
  • To be distressed in ungodly activities
  • A necessary prerequisite for repentance (Godly
    sorrow)
  • The feeling of being to up from the flo up
  • but it is not Repentance

11
God grants (a gift) of Repentance so Rom.24
  • There is a change of heart and mind to
  • Believe and accept revealed Truth
  • See sin as God sees sin
  • Change the mind from what was once loved to what
    is now hated
  • Receive forgiveness that leads to Salvation and
    deliverance from sin
  • To turn

12
  • Acts 2021
  • 21 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that
they must turn to God in repentance and have
    faith in our Lord Jesus.
  • Acts 2620-21
  • First to those in Damascus, then to those in
Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the Gentiles
also, I preached that they should repent and turn
to God and prove their repentance by their deeds.

13
Fruits of Repentance, a provision of Salvation
  • Turning from doubt and unbelief, from all self
righteousness, from dead works, and any other
    means of deliverance
  • to believing (faith) that Jesus is Gods
    provision for deliverance from sin.
  • Changing the mind about your own works and
efforts and accepting the truth of the word of
God that Jesus is the savior of all sinners
  • Acts 20212619-20

14
The result of a changed mind is a changed life
  • Matt 32-3
  • 2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven
is near." 3 This is he who was spoken of through
    the prophet Isaiah
  • "A voice of one calling in the desert,
  • 'Prepare the way for the Lord,
  • make straight paths for him.'"

15
Jesus taught the 4 basic attitudes of the kingdom
that are the penitents steps of transformation
  • Matt 53-6
  • 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, (need for God)
  • for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • 4 Blessed are those who mourn, (grief)
  • for they will be comforted.
  • 5 Blessed are the meek, (humility)
  • for they will inherit the earth.
  • 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for
righteousness (desire for the truth to
change) for they shall be filled.

  • For there is no difference
  • 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the
    glory of God,
  • 24 being justified freely by His grace through
the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
  • 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His
blood, through faith, to demonstrate His
righteousness, because in His forbearance God had
passed over the sins that were previously
    committed,
  • 26 to demonstrate at the present time His
righteousness, that He might be just and the
justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

of the children of Israel, and all their
    transgressions, concerning all their sins,
putting them on the head of the goat, and shall
send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a
