NPA Assessments
  • The NPA assessments are based on the BST and all
items are mapped onto the BST bands.
  • These assessments can be used to track
performance of students (in Years 2,3 and 4 in
    2009) over time.
  • The second round of testing is planned for April
    2010.

NPA Assessments
  • Feedback will be provided to schools after each
    round of testing.
  • The first round of analysis has been delayed
slightly while all schools complete the tests.
  • Feedback on testing is due to schools by the end
    of August

SMART data analysis

SMART
  • The decision to use 2008 NAPLAN as baseline data
was determined by the Commonwealth at the
Measuring Improvement workshop. This meeting was
held 29 April 2009, prior to the NAPLAN tests,
with representatives from all states and
territories. An expert group from the Australian
Council for Educational Research (ACER) outlined
the need to use student data from 2008, as this
data was gathered prior to any knowledge of the
implementation of the National Partnership in
    Literacy and Numeracy.

SMART
  • A full day workshop will be provided for
Principals and others in the school improvement
    teams
  • Workshops will be conducted by School Development
Officers in the government sector and relevant
officers in the Catholic and Independent sectors
  • Principals need to come to these workshops with
their own NAPLAN SMART data loaded onto a laptop
    (or laptops)

15
SMART
  • The SMART data course will be presented by
personnel who have a close working knowledge of
    their schools.
  • Each presenter has the flexibility to navigate
through the SMART training module, emphasizing
aspects deemed most appropriate for the
    participating schools.

Timeline for SMART training
Sectors will be in contact with schools to advise
of dates for training. Some regions may have
training after 2009 data is released on September
11. Although SMART training using the schools
own data is mandatory and forms part of the
School Self Evaluation module, it can be
conducted at various times within term 3 to suit
regional arrangements.

Timeline for targeted SSE
The SSE process should begin as soon as possible
following these 2 day training courses. For some
schools the SMART training will be conducted
after these days, for others it has already been
conducted using 2008 data.

DASA
  • The data analysis skills assessment is a quick
online survey based on the CLAS MyMap for ITC
    model
  • It is designed to capture information about the
profile of a whole school, SEG or region with
regard to data analysis skills and awareness
  • It does not identify results of individuals

Educational Measurement and School Accountability
Directorate (EMSAD)
32
DASA
  • DASA is suitable for teachers and school
    executive
  • The tool provides feedback to individual users by
placing their results for each of 8 domains onto
    a matrix
  • DASA also provides links to resources to assist
staff to increase their awareness of, and skills
    in, data analysis

Educational Measurement and School Accountability
Directorate (EMSAD)
33
Timeline for DASA
  • First use is planned for term 4 to inform the
Principal and the school improvement team
  • All teachers in the school should complete the
    survey
  • The DASA could be completed again in 2010 to see
if the profile of the school has changed
