Population Census History of Mongolia
  • During the 20th century Mongolia has conducted
    nine population censuses in 1918, 1935, 1944,
    1956, 1963, 1969, 1979, 1989 and 2000
  • 1969, 1979 and 1989 censuses were developed in
    accordance with methodologies recommended by
    Commission of Economic Mutual Assistance for
    socialist countries. Main features of these
    censuses
  • Population censuses and housing censuses were
    conducted together
  • UN recommendation on periodicity

2000 Population and Housing census
  • 2000 census was the first census after adapting
    to a market economy
  • 2000 census was conducted in accordance with UN
    Principles and Recommendations for Population
    and Housing Censuses
  • First time, rich information on migration were
    collected
  • First time, census materials were processed using
    personal computers and international standard
    software.

  • First time, the post-enumeration survey was
    conducted
  • Broad-based census advocacy and publicity were
    conducted compared with the previous censuses
  • Output tables extracted from the census were
    consistent with international standards
