1
Not Forsaking Our Own Assembling Together
  • An exhortation to encourage each other more as we
    see the Day drawing near.
  • Hebrews 1025

2
Introduction
  • It is said that when a lesson is given regarding
attendance those who need to hear it most are
    never present.
  • Consider the fact that the Hebrew writer was not
writing to those who miss services.
  • He wrote to the faithful NOT to be like those who
    (continue to) walk in darkness.
  • Thus, the Hebrew letter is written to
encourage/spur Christians on forward, not sliding
    back into perdition.

3
Introduction
  • To note the context of Hebrews 1025
  • We will briefly survey the Hebrew letter to note
the exhortations and strategic exhortations and
    warnings.
  • Then, we shall look more closely Hebrews chapter
10 to get a feel for the exhortations
    specifically found in verses 22-25
  • Finally, we shall focus in on verse 25 in light
of the exhortations and see exactly what is meant
    by the Hebrew writer.

4
Background to the Exhortation

    be steadfast to/in Him.
  • Chapters 1-2 Jesus higher than the angels (ch.
1), therefore give the more earnest heed to His
    words (ch. 2).
  • Chapters 3-4 Jesus was faithful (ch. 3),
therefore you be faithful (ch. 3-4).
  • Chapters 4-6 Jesus, the perfect High Priest
(abruptly stops message to rebuke those who
became dull of hearing, thus not growing in the
    Lord. 511-14 6).

5
Background to the Exhortation
  • The overall message Jesus is greater, therefore
    be steadfast to/in Him.
  • Chapters 7-9 The continued message of Jesus
the (better) High Priest of the (better) new
    covenant.
  • Chapter 10 Jesus, the perfect sacrifice that
allows us to have access to God, therefore be
faithful (not like those who fall back into
    perdition).
  • Chapters 11-12 Examples of those faithful (ch.
11), therefore we need to be found faithful (ch.
    12).
  • Chapter 13 Concluding exhortations.

    strong dissuasion.

they see the Day approaching. V. 25

Focusing on Not forsaking (???ata?e?p?)
  • Summary
  • Whatever the reason (persecution, indifference,
or simple infidelity) there were those who
forsook the assembling of the saints when coming
    together as a church.
  • This is a conscious rejection of God and His will
    for His people.
  • The dissuasion not forsaking the assembling of
    each other
  • If we sin willfullythere no longer remains a
    sacrifice for sins. V. 26
  • Insteadthere remains a judgment from Gods
    wrath. V. 27

14
Conclusion
  • There is no better way than to
  • Consider one another.
  • Hold the confession of your hope (without
    wavering),
  • Stirring up love and good works.
  • Especially as we gather together as an assembly
to worship our God whom we now have access to,
especially as we see the Day approaching.

15
Conclusion
  • Forsaking the assembling of the church coming
together is more than simply missing services,
it is making the sacrifice our High Priest of no
    effect in your life.
