From The Peace Garden
Zilwaukee welcomed on Wednesday,
September 19, 2007, several special
visitors. Dr. Xiang from Normal
University in Shanghi, China, along
with his interpreter, the Saginaw Valley
State University and Saginaw Public
Schools Gerstacker Endowment team,
Superintendent, Dr. Dawkins, Assistant
Superintendent Mrs. Turner, along with State
Representative John Moolenaar visited and toured
our school. The visit, as part of the Gerstacker
exchange between the USA and China, included a
wonderful third grade performance in the gym
under the direction of music teacher, Mrs.
Malkin. Meaningful discussion with school and PTC
leaders followed in the media center. Dr Xiang
dialogued with staff, regarding curriculum,
school goals and the importance of global studies
in our respective countries and around the world.
Zilwaukee School presented Dr. Xiang as is
custom in China, with a gift basket of Michigan
products, a Zilwaukee School yearbook and
end-of-year student musical on DVD, created by
Mrs. Johnson. Dr. Xiang and the team were very
impressed with the school, its goals, community
support and most importantly, our students. Dr.
Xiang invited our school representatives to visit
him and his country. We are proud to have made
another new friend in our global community.

MEAP Time Again!
We have begun a new and exciting way of
beginning our week! Our fifth through eighth
graders will start their week off with a brief
informational assembly from 825 to 855. The
kindergarten through fourth graders attend an
assembly from 915 to 945. Our assemblies
involve announcements, review of
rules/procedures, celebration of birthdays, sign
of the week, and various speakers including Boy
Scouts and fund raising events so far. The
assemblies incorporate an emphasis on character
education with positive reinforcement. The theme
for September is Positive Attitude. October will
be Respect. On Monday, Sept. 24th, a local hero
and Zilwaukee fourth grader, Kalleigh Martin, was
recognized for rescuing an injured neighbor. The
neighbor, Mrs. Gilchrist, spoke to both
assemblies about Kalleighs act of heroism and
citizenship. In addition, the Caught Being
Good program has also been implemented during
the assemblies. Many students have already been
recognized in front of their classmates for an
act of kindness or good character! They are
individually called up to receive a treat donated
by the Z-PTC and the applause/recognition of
their peers. The assemblies have thus far
been well received by our student body. We are
also looking forward to integrating our previous
Ambassador of the Month program into the
morning assemblies with the celebration ceremony
taking place on the final Monday of the month.
You are all invited to share this informational
time with us. Please feel free to provide
referrals/contacts for speakers as we continue to
seek community leaders and relevant guests for
our assemblies throughout the year.

Signs of The Times
International Opportunity!! You are invited
to be a host family for an International student
from SVSU. The responsibility would be for you
and your family to spend a little time each month
with the international student sharing your
culture with him/her and that person would in
turn share their culture with you. This is a
great opportunity to learn about another part of
the world first hand. If you are interested in
participating in this program, contact Zilwaukee
