Tonights Meeting
  • The purpose of tonights meeting is to outline
    for you the many opportunities for your child
    here at OKM and to take the first step in making
    the transition process from elementary to
    secondary school as seamless as possible.

Philosophy of Education at OKM
  • We are focused on creating opportunities to
    enhance each students individual potential,
    helping them excel in academics, athletics,
    leadership, and the fine arts and applied skills.
  • We also offer a wide range of extra curricular
    activities to enrich students high school
    experience.
  • We believe that ALL students can learn and
    achieve success.

Philosophy of Education at OKM
  • OKM has implemented a school-wide system of
    prevention and intervention strategies to
    identify and support at risk or under
    supported students.
  • Students with unique and difficult circumstances
    will have whatever support is necessary wrapped
    around them to help them succeed.

Philosophy of Education at OKM
  • Students who are struggling academically in any
    of their courses are identified at regular
    intervals and are required to access help as soon
    as they experience difficulty.
  • Students who are at risk of failing will be
    directed to the schools Academic Intervention
    Program, or alternate support to ensure they are
    held accountable for learning.

OKM Students are Achieving Academic Excellence!
  • Some Academic Highlights from Last Year
  • OKM Grade 9 District Science and Math Exam
    Results were 10 above the rest of the school
    district.
  • OKMs Grade 10 Provincial Exam Marks were
    substantially above the provincial average Math
    4.4, English 9.2, and Science 3.7
  • 21 Provincial Scholarships by last years grads
  • Grade 12 Provincial Exam Results well above the
    district average.

Transition Process
  • Feb 8th and 12th OKM Administration
    Counsellors visited AME (8th) DWE (12th) to
    discuss course options and transition with grade
    7 students. Course selection sheets were
    distributed.
  • Feb 11th Parents are introduced to program and
    course options
  • Feb 15th After being signed by parents, Course
    Selection sheets are returned to the grade 7
    teacher.

  • Feb 21st 715 Hockey Information Night 830
    Soccer Information Night
  • April 23rd Grade 7 student and parent
    connection night 700 830 p.m.
  • May 5th Back-Packers program. OKM students to
    visit DWE.
  • May 7th Back-Packers program. OKM students to
    visit AME.

  • August Grade 7s are phoned and invited to the
    opening day Link Crew orientation session.
  • Sept. 2nd New grade 8s spend 1/2 day in the
    school with Link Crew leaders.
  • September All new grade 8s are assigned Peer
    Counsellors and will be invited to participate in
    an OKM school spirit event.

  • English 8, English 8 Honors, Dynamics English 8
    (based on assessment and teacher recommendation)
  • Math 8, Dynamics Math 8 , Math 9 Honors (for
    those who have completed Compacted Math in grade
    7)
  • Social Studies 8
  • Science 8
  • PE 8
  • French 8
  • Living Skills 8 (Home Ec and Industrial Ed)
  • Fine Arts (Band, Choir, Intro Band, or Visual and
    Performing Arts)
  • Health and Career Education 8 (integrated into
    subject areas)
