The Antimatter Problem
  • Big Bang started with equal parts matter and
    antimatter
  • Now there is only matter? Where did the
    imbalance come from?

Strategies for Studying the Universe
  • Accelerator experiments We create particles that
have not existed since the first moments after
    the Big Bang
  • We study how they behave and interact
  • Tools are particle accelerators and detectors
  • Astrophysical observation We observe the relics
    of the big bang
  • Observe the Universe as it exists today
  • Tools are observatories in space and on the
    ground
  • The two ends of our investigation must meet

10
SLAC Particle Physics Future
  • Successful completion of B-Factory Program
  • Accelerator based research at the energy frontier
  • ILC, LCD, ATLAS, LARP, Accelerator Research
  • Investigations of Dark Matter and Dark Energy
    (non-accelerator)
  • GLAST, LSST, JDEM
  • Understanding the fundamental nature of the
    neutrino
  • EXO
  • All elements supported by strong program of
    theoretical investigations

11
B-Factory Physics Program
  • Operations through Sept 30, 2008
  • Data analysis and continue for several more years
  • Open scientific questions will remain!
  • There are surprises yet to come!

12
Evolution of B-Factory Accelerator Resources
  • SLAC will operate worlds first x-ray laser
    starting in FY2009
  • Uses 1/3 of SLAC linac
  • ASD will operate LCLSmajor function for ASD
    start-ing in 2009
  • ILC is growing
  • Some ASD resources will naturally evolve there
  • SABER will start independent operations in late
    2009

13
The Energy Frontier LHC
  • SLAC Participation in LHC
  • Participation in LHC Accelerator Research Program
    (LARP)
  • Designing collimators for LHC/LHC Upgrades
  • Participation in beam commissioning of
    accelerator
  • SLAC physicists have joined ATLAS
  • Participation off to good start
  • Attracting excellent postdocs and students
  • SLAC will host Tier 2 computing center for LHC
  • Partnering with UCSC and LBNL will have very
strong west coast hub for ATLAS community
  • LHC opens an exciting new energy frontier for
    particle physics
  • Optimistic (with good reasons) that there will be
lots of exciting new physics there

14
The Energy Frontier ILC
  • The highest priority for the international field
of particle physics is the full, direct
exploration of the TeV energy scale.
  • with high probability new physics will be there
  • ILC an essential tool in this exploration
  • SLAC is committed to the ILC
  • SLAC staff are broadly involved in all elements
    aspects of the ILC effort
  • Playing critical roles
  • Presidents FY07 budget very encouraging for the
    field!
  • Tremendous help from EPP2010

15
The Energy Frontier Accelerator Research
SABER
  • Accelerator Research for Future Machines
  • High Gradient Studies for CLIC type machine
  • Development of L-band power sources for ILC
  • Proof of Principle Studies of New Acceleration
    Mechanisms

Neutrinos -- EXO
  • Determining the fundamental nature of neutrino
  • Search for bb0n decay in 136Xe--gt136Ba e- e-
  • Absolute mass scale?
  • Is the neutrino its own antiparticle?

20
Planning for FY09 Transition
  • In FY09 the B-factory will stop operations LCLS
    will start operations
  • The challenge we face between now and 2009 is the
balance of the B-factory priorities with LCLS
  • We recognize this challenge and it is being
    actively and aggressively managed
  • Transition planning well underway
  • TWG led by PSD and Keith Hodgson
  • Laboratory will grow between now and end of the
    decade

Safety
  • Thank you for your focus and attention to safety
  • Thank you for effectively integrating safety into
the planning and execution of your work
  • Safety is an individual responsibility of each of
    us here at SLAC
