Good morning class! I have some exciting news to
tell all of you today!

We have been learning a lot about different kinds
of animals and now we are going to see some!

Are we going to the zoo?!?

Yes, we will be taking a field trip to the zoo
with our sixth grade buddies. Butthat is not
all. We are going to raise baby chicks right
here in our classroom!

Some farmers are being very nice and are going to
give us some eggs that a chicken on their farm
has laid. We will keep the eggs in an object
called an incubator until they hatch. Then we
will get to keep the chicks in a cage in our
classroom for a couple of days before we have to
return them to the farm.

Im so excited! But Im a little confused.

Mrs. Gunther said the chicks come out of eggs
These must be different eggs! Maybe I should ask
Mrs. Gunther.

Mrs. Gunther, are these eggs different from the
ones we can buy at the grocery store?

That is an excellent question, Cassie. Class,
the chick eggs we are going to get and the eggs
you can buy from the store both started out the
same. They both came from a chicken. But the
ones in the store have gone through a process so
that they do not turn into chicks. This makes
them able for us to eat. We will be learning
more about eggs during the next week while we
wait for our own eggs to hatch.

Look at the eggs! I cant wait to see
them hatch. I want to see the chicks now. When
can we see them Mrs. Gunther?

They still wont hatch for a few days, but it is
important for us to observe the eggs and watch
for any changes.

Boys and girls, today we will let the chicks out
of the cage for a little while, and each of you
will get a chance to hold them. Form a circle,
and I will get the chicks and start passing them
around.

All week I have been looking forward to holding
the chicks. I never thought that would happen!
Ill never forget the baby chicks, thats for
