Title: For the preaching of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being sa

1
For the preaching of the cross is foolishness to
those who are perishing, but to us who are being
saved it is the power of God. For it is written
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the
cleverness of the clever I will set aside.I
Corinthians 118
  • Getting Perspective on Personal Salvation

2
Three Historical Settings
  • Roman Catholic teaching Children are regenerated
by baptism. If later in life a person hears the
gospel, he can resist or cooperate by giving
assent to church doctrine and being baptized.
  • Arminian viewAtonement was an oblation and
satisfaction for sins of all people rendering
them able to respond to the gospel. (Berkhof p.
    419) God voted, Satan voted and you have the
    determining vote.

3
  • Lutheran viewWhile emphasizing that salvation is
all of grace, they start with manthey see in
faith first of all a gift of God, but at the same
time make faith, more particularly an active
principle in man and an activity of man, as the
all determining factor in their order of
    salvation. (Berkhof p. 420)

4
Two Timelines Frame These Two Chapters (IX and X)
  • The timeline of fall and glory
  • The timeline of personal salvation

5
Effectual callingpersonal Generally
calling/spreading the net to all
God converts and translates to state of grace.
Redeems from slavery, enables to choose and do
good reflecting salvation, not earning salvation.
In state of glory the will of man is stabilized
to good only.
Able to choose to please God and do good
Fall
All men are unable to respond savingly to the
Word of God and the gospel cf. Rom. 87-8 I
Cor. 214.   For as in Adam all die, so also
in Christ shall all be made alive. I
Corinthians 1522 Therefore, just as through one
man sin entered into the world, and death
through sin, and so death spread to all men,
because all sinned Rom 512
Incapable of pleasing God or choosing salvitic
good
