THE PROBLEM
Mrs. Goss needs to replace her kitchen floor.
APM has really nice ceramic tile on sale for
12.99 a square foot. They also have grout on
sale for 5.99 per gallon. She will need 2
gallons. Her kitchen is fifteen feet long and
twelve feet wide. She also has a closet to
cover, in which the dimensions are 1 yard long by
1 yard wide. How much will it cost Mrs. Goss to
replace the floor if she buys the tile and grout
on sale at APM? Be sure to explain how you
solved it.

Step 2 Find the area of the closet. 3 feet 1
yard therefore, 3 X 3 9 square feet
Step 1 Find the area of the kitchen floor. 15
X 12 180 square feet without the closet.
Step 3 Add the area without the closet and the
area of the closet together to find the total
area.
180 9 189 total square feet
4
5.99 X 2 11.98 FOR GROUT
189 X 12.99 244.51 FOR THE TILE
THE MONEY
244.51 11.98 256.49 FOR MRS. GOSSS NEW
KITCHEN FLOOR.

The explanation for finding the area
  • First I multiplied the length times width to find
the area of the kitchen floor.
  • Next I multiplied the length times width of the
    closet to find the area.
  • Then I added the areas together to find the total
    area.

6
The explanation for finding out how much money
will be spent.
  • I multiplied the amount for grout by 2 because
she needs 2 gallons to find out how much she will
    spend on grout.
  • Then I multiplied the total area that needed to
be covered by the cost per square foot to find
out how much she will spend on tile.
  • Finally, I added the two to get the total amount
    she will spend.
