Title: Global Warming An environmental dilemma

1
Global WarmingAn environmental dilemma
2
What is Global Warming?
  • Global Warming is
  • A change in the Earths climate resulting in a
thinning ozone layer, melting glaciers, changes
    in nature, and rising temperatures.

3
The Ozone Layer
4
Ozone Layer?
  • The Ozone Layer is a layer of the upper
atmosphere, which blocks most of the suns
radiation. It is located in between the
    Stratosphere and Troposphere.

5
Ozone Depletion.
  • Ozone Depletion
  • The destruction of the Ozone Layer.

6
Causes of Ozone Depletion.
  • Chlorine and Bromine released from CFCs.
  • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) man made compounds.
  • Natural events is a temporary cause of Ozone
    Depletion.

7
Greenhouse Gases.
  • Greenhouse gases are chemical compounds (gases),
that naturally blanket the earth, and absorb the
    suns radiation (heat).

8
Ozone Depletion Greenhouse Gases Disaster.
  • Ozone Depletion allows more of the suns
radiation to come in through the atmosphere of
the Earth and the Greenhouse Gases absorbs the
radiation, trapping heat in the Earths
    atmosphere.
  • Thus, Earth gets hotter, hotter, and
  • .

9
Fitting it Together!
10
  • GLACIERS

11
Glaciers and the Sun
  • The sun heats the ocean around the glaciers
    causing glaciers to melt
  • When the glaciers melt, the sun cant reflect off
of the glaciers and the rays get trapped in the
    ozone layer

12
Glaciers and snow
  • When glaciers melt, snow usually replaces them
  • Because glaciers melt so fast, the amount of snow
needed is not being produced to keep up with the
speed at which they are melting

13
What happens?
  • Glaciers melt at faster rates
  • An important factor in glaciers melting are
    rising temperatures
  • As temperatures increase, the weather becomes
    warmer, and glaciers melt faster
  • Life in polar regions are dying

14
Facts
  • Sea levels are expected to rise at least 4 feet
    in the next 100 years
  • This would cause many places to flood
  • Some would be underwater or partially underwater
  • -For example Florida, North Carolina,
California and Delaware. There would also be
many islands partially underwater or completely
underwater, as well as various countries, such as
    Bangladesh and Indonesia

  • NATURE

20
Causes
  • Rising temperatures
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Humans

21
Effects of Global Warming on Nature
  • Deforestation
  • Animal endangerment
  • Human survival declines

22
Deforestation
  • Humans
  • Forest fires
  • Drought kill trees

23
Wildlife
  • Animals become extinct
  • Population of certain animals grow

24
Human Life
  • Poverty
  • Conflicts
  • Necessities become
  • scarce

25
Rising Temperatures
26
Rising Temperatures are responsible for
Expanding deserts
27
Melting glaciers
28
Rising sea levels
29
Over Time
  • Earths temperature has been increasing
  • Increasing at a faster rate since 1950s

30
Temperatures have been increasing since 1950s
31
Temperature since 1880
32
Temperature Predictions up to 2130
33
Effects
  • In 2000
  • Heat wave hits Europe
  • Temperatures reached
  • up to 111ºF
  • Antarctica
  • Warming is five times greater
  • Made almost entirely of ice

34
Statistics
  • Year 2080
  • Temperatures will
  • raise by 5ºF
  • This could lead to rising
  • sea levels
  • Shortages of resources
  • Homes becoming destroyed,
  • people being homeless

35
Survey
  • Who likes guacamole? Or Avocadoes?
  • Who likes baseball?

36
If global warming continues
  • Guacamole could possibly cease to exist due to
rising temperatures that harms the avocadoes used
    to make the dish
  • Baseball can become a distant memory if the ash
trees bats are made from continue to disappear
  • Conflicts with other regions could develop due to
    diminishing resources. Such conflicts have
    already been witnessed

37
  • How can we eliminate global warming?

38
  • While Global Warming can never truly be
reversed, there are ways some ways to solve most
of the problems it creates. Here are some ways

39
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
  • Reducing waste helps eliminate 1000 pounds worth
    of Carbon Dioxide emission.
  • Recycling also helps reduce Carbon Dioxide.
  • Reusing helps you save money, while also reducing
    Carbon Dioxide.

40
Use Energy Star Lights
  • Switching to Energy Star, helps you save money
and eliminate the 100 pounds of Carbon Dioxide.

41
Do Not Waste Electricity
  • Turning of the light equals less energy being
    used.
  • Meaning, it can be conserved for later use.

Global Warming
  • You have the mind, the spirit, and the will to
make a positive difference. Leave a helpful
impact on the world. Tell your friends about
global warming, write your congressman, and
    become eco-friendly.
  • A positive deed starts with a positive idea.
