Rhetoric
  • In order to bring about change, the revolutionary
    needs to be able to persuade/convince his or her
    audience.
  • Most revolutionary writers were well-schooled in
    the ancient Greek first compiled/classified by
    Aristotle art and science of persuasion called
    Rhetoric therefore, most revolutionary speeches
    followed a rhetorical pattern

Rhetoric for the most part, follows the
Persuasive pattern that you already know
  • You must first determine
  • Subject
  • Purpose
  • Audience
  • Narration

The Language of Rhetoric
  • Engaging the reader is Exordium
  • Topic sentence is called Partitio
  • Thesis points are called Arguments
  • The body of an essay is called the Confirmation.

APPEALS
  • Logos (truth, straight forward information) ex.
    Numbers, amounts, s, characters qualities,
    concrete information, specifics, evidence from
    book quotes mind
  • Pathos (feelings and senses) love, anger,
    patriotism, revolt, Ahh factor, sexy, sympathy,
    fear, imagery, sensory details, humor heart
  • Ethos (values) what the audience values
    Universal values money, time, life

  • In rhetoric it is called REFUTATIO or Anticipated
    Argument/ Counter Argument and it has two steps
  • Recognize the oppositions side then say But,
    however, on the other hand
  • Support or prove how your points are better than
    theirs.
  • Example Mama, I know you said nothing good
    happens after midnight however, if I am going to
    do something bad I can do it anytime before my
    curfew.

Conclusion
  • In rhetoric it is called periration (the word
    period comes from this) and it has three parts
  • Restate major arguments
  • Revisit the strongest pathos/or ethos appeals
  • Call to Action charge the audience (call to act)
